GAME PREVIEW
Islanders (24-21-6) at Montreal (28-18-6)

(2:00 p.m. ET, TV: FSN NY | Radio: Bloomberg 1130) The Islanders look to gain points in six straight games and keep pace with the playoff pack as they take on the Montreal Canadiens at the Molson Centre Saturday afternoon.

It's been a rocky road since the Islanders returned from the All-Star break, but they've managed to earn at least a point in all five games.

In their most recent adventure, they took a 2-1 lead into the third period against the Atlanta Thrashers only to see their lead disappear temporarily. Jason Blake re-gained the lead for the Islanders with 8:08 left in the third period, while Trent Hunter and Viktor Kozlov tacked on two more to give the Islanders a 5-2 lead.

Blake's goal puts him at 27 on the season, only one shy of his career of 28, which he set last season.

The star of the game, however, was Islanders netminder Mike Dunham, who stopped 30 of 32 shots. His best save came against his former teammate, Ilya Kovalchuk, who he robbed from point-blank range late in the second period. Dunham and the Islanders also got some help from the goal post a few times to help preserve the win.

With the Islanders' win and the Rangers' loss to Toronto yesterday, the teams are now deadlocked at 54 points. They're tied for tenth in the East, but only four points behind three teams tied for sixth place Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Carolina.

The Islanders take on a Montreal team ranked fourth in the Eastern Conference with 62 points. Since the All-Star break, the Canadiens have played .500 hockey, sporting a record of 1-1-1. Their most recent contest was a 5-4 shootout loss to Pittsburgh. Montreal salvaged a point after falling behind 4-2 in the third period on goals by Mike Johnson and Mathieu Dandenault.

Sheldon Souray continues to pace the Canadiens in goals as a defenseman. It's no surprise, since his slapshot reached an even 100 MPH on the speed gun at the All-Star Game. Another defenseman, Danny Markov leads the team in assists, while captain Saku Koivu is the leader in points with 43.

The Islanders will also have to watch out for Long Island-native Chris Higgins and Czech Tomas Plekanec. Higgins has 22 points in only 34 games, while Plekanec compiled 12 points in 12 games during the month of January.

Frenchman Cristobal Huet is still seeing a majority of time in goal after stealing the number one position at the end of last season from David Aebischer.

Chris King and Steve Mears have the call on Bloomberg Radio 1130, while Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe can be seen tonight on FSN NY.
