GAME PREVIEW
Islanders (25-21-6) at Washington (21-25-7)

(1:00 p.m. ET, TV: FSN NY | Radio: Bloomberg 1130) The Islanders will try for their third straight win and points in seven consecutive games when they travel to Washington to faceoff against Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals today at the Verizon Center.

Super Bowl weekend has started off well for the Islanders who play back-to-back matinee games for the first time this season. Saturday saw the Islanders defeat the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 with three third period goals. It was the first time all season the Canadiens led heading into the third period, but failed to earn at least a point in the game. It was the third time the Islanders have won when trailing after 40 minutes.

Trent Hunter and Miroslav Satan provided all of the offense, each scoring two goals. Hunter has 15 points in his last 15 games, including points in six straight. Rick DiPietro picked up his 21st win behind a 28-save effort.

However, the Islanders lost defenseman Radek Martinek for 4-6 weeks, according to head coach Ted Nolan, after falling awkwardly on his left leg.

The Islanders were put to the test following the All-Star break, matching up against five teams likely playoff-bound. The result: eight out of a possible ten points.

Now the Islanders must prove themselves against teams below them in the standings, including today's Capitals.

When the All-Star Game concluded, the Islanders were two points out of eighth place in the Eastern Conference and only one point ahead of Washington. Since then, the two teams have gone in opposite directions. The Islanders have picked up points in all six games they've played, while the Capitals have won only one game in five tries. The Islanders are now three points behind eighth place Carolina, while the Capitals find themselves in 14th place, ten points out of a playoff spot.

The Capitals continued their slide to the bottom of the standings yesterday against the surging Pittsburgh Penguins. What was anticipated to be a high-scoring tilt between the two best sophomores in the game Sidney Crosby and Ovechkin turned into a goaltender's duel. Pittsburgh goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury stole the show, stopping all 30 shots for the shutout to help the Penguins to a 2-0 victory.

Despite being held off the scoresheet yesterday, Ovechkin is showing the league that least year's Calder Trophy season wasn't a fluke. He is currently in third place in the NHL point race with 70.

Chris King and Steve Mears have the call on Bloomberg Radio 1130, while Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe can be seen tonight on FSN NY.
