WASHINGTON 2, ISLANDERS 1, SO
Isles drop defensive battle in shootout

Official Scoresheet | Official Super Stats

By Jason Lockhart

Alexander Semin scored the only goal in the shootout as the Washington Capitals defeated the Islanders 2-1 at the Verizon Center Sunday afternoon.

Olaf Kolzig earned the win by stopping 31 of 32 shots in regulation in overtime and all three Islanders shooters in the shootout. Rick DiPietro came up just short turning aside 30 of 31 shots in regulation and overtime.

Matt Pettinger scored off a rebound 2:58 into the first period to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead after Richard Zednik's wraparound stuff was denied by DiPietro.

The Islanders erased the Capitals' lead 27 seconds into the second period, while shorthanded. After failing to convert on a 2-on-1 rush, Mike Sillinger scored after Trent Hunter fed him in front for a tip-in.

DiPietro made his best save of the game when Matt Bradley cut to the net with the puck. Bradley's shot nearly got to the goal line, but DiPietro's left skate knocked the puck aside to keep the scored tied at one.

Sean Hill also came up huge in overtime, stopping a shot from the point that was goal-bound with DiPietro scrambling in the crease.

Semin scored in the shootout with a tricky deke to the backhand, while none of the Islanders shooters could get one past Kolzig.

The Islanders next play the Philadelphia Flyers at the Nassau Coliseum on Wednesday evening.
