'NO THANKS, BIG TOBACCO'
Islanders general manager Garth Snow joined the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island last week at the Long Island Marriott at their event to honor 39 organizations and businesses who have said "No Thanks, Big Tobacco, We Don't Want Your Money" by signing a policy not to accept tobacco industry funding or promote tobacco in any way.
"The New York Islanders care about the health and well-being of our community. We want to have a positive influence on young people. Not accepting tobacco company sponsorship or promotion sends a message to our youth that using tobacco is not cool. That is why we have signed this pledge," said Snow.
"Sponsorship and charity is an increasingly important marketing tool for the tobacco industry," said Susan Kennedy, Director of the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island. "Community giving is a way to get the company name and products out in front of the target market, reverse the widely held negative public image of the tobacco industry and build support for the tobacco industry among corporate leaders. Unfortunately the money that they provide these organizations comes from selling a product that kills more than 400,000 people each year. We are pleased to honor organizations like the New York Islanders that have made a commitment to refuse to allow the tobacco industry to use them for public relations purposes."
The Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island is one of 30 community partnerships funded by the New York State Department of Health's Bureau of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control. This year they have been heavily focused on working with organizations and businesses to stop tobacco companies from targeting our kids through advertising, sponsorship and promotion.
