ISLANDERS 2, PHILADELPHIA 0
DiPietro records fifth shutout of season, defeat rival Flyers

Official Scoresheet | Official Super Stats

Rick DiPietro made 27 saves to register his fifth shutout of the season as the Islanders (26-21-7) topped the Philadelphia Flyers 2-0 Wednesday night at the Nassau Coliseum. Miroslav Satan and Viktor Kozlov each tallied goals to extend the Islanders' streak to points in eight consecutive games.

"We played a strong team game," said head coach Ted Nolan. "When you're playing a tight game, someone has to step up to score some goals, and tonight it was Satan and Kozlov".

Kozlov opened the scoring when he backhanded a goal past goaltender Antero Niittymaki from an almost impossible angle. Defenseman Tom Poti streaked down the slot untouched and made what looked like one too many passes when he dished it off to Kozlov, but the big Russian was able to throw it home at 8:13 of the first period. Rookie Jeff Tambellini tallied an assist on the play his fourth in four games since being recalled from Bridgeport.

With a delayed penalty coming against the Flyers, Satan cashed in his 18th goal of the season for a 2-0 Islanders lead. Satan grabbed Andy Hilbert's pass, spun around and put the puck in the open side, 3:37 into the second period.

With 7:38 gone by in the second period, DiPietro stoned R.J. Umberger, who made a perfect re-direction after receiving a pass from Jeff Carter.

"I was trying to move across with everything I had," said DiPietro. "I was fortunate to get a piece of it."

The Islanders out-shot the Flyers 37-27 in the game.

"Our forwards are doing a good job getting back and preventing scoring chances," said DiPietro. "The guys are getting down and blocking a lot of shots."

The Islanders, who are 5-0-3 in their past eight games, head to Boston to take on the Bruins for the final time of the season at the TD Banknorth Garden.

Havoc Zone Fan of the Game: Tom Scott of Hicksville, who attends Hicksville High School, has been an Islanders fan since birth. Today this brave young man stood outside for tonight's game since noon, winning his way to Havoc Zone fan of the game honors.  While thinking about tonight's game against the Flyers, Tom did his best to move around in the frigid conditions. This young fan proudly stood and waited until two o'clock when he was rewarded with human interaction as fellow fans arrived. Tom's favorite Islander is Alexei Yashin and the front row exposure of the Havoc Zone allows fans to be up close and personal with all of his favorite Islanders stars.  The view however is just the beginning with the affordable ticket price of just $19 and the possibility of being on television as well. Tom's favorite part of the seats is how many of them are in the same area behind the goal and gives his advice to future Havoc Zone fan winners about fighting the elements:  "just try and stay warm."

Slapshots: A Danish TV network was in town today to follow Frans Nielsen, who is the second Danish-born and first Danish-raised NHLer...Tonight's attendance was 10,229...Mike Sillinger has nine points in his last nine games...Miroslav Satan has notched four goals in the past four games...Alexei Yashin (knee), Shawn Bates (groin) and Radek Martinek (leg) were tonight's scratches.

Game Operations: The Islanders game ops crew featured Blake Comeau is this week's "Allure Down on the Farm." They also debut the feature "Find the Fact," where a fan must find the even that actually occurred among the two false statements...Eve Angler, who is only 8 years old and skates at Islanders Iceworks, did a wonderful job in her figuring skating routine during the first intermission.
