GAME PREVIEW
Islanders (34-25-10) at Ottawa (40-23-7)

(7:30 p.m. ET, TV: FSN NY (ch.72) | Radio: Bloomberg 1130) After failing to hold a third-period lead against Montreal on Tuesday, the Islanders will try to rebound against a dangerous Ottawa Senators team tonight at the Scotiabank Place.

On Tuesday, the Islanders lost for the first time in regulation after taking a lead into the third period. Up 3-2, the Islanders allowed three third-period goals and lost 5-3, but remain in the seventh position in the Eastern Conference, tied with Carolina.

To make matters worse, Rick DiPietro left the game late in the first period after colliding with Steve Begin while diving for a loose puck. DiPietro is listed as day-to-day with a sore neck and is a game time decision to start tonight.

Mike Dunham replaced DiPietro and stopped 27 of 32 shots in his first time in net since February 1st.

Before things fell apart in the third period, the former Edmonton Oilers tandem of Ryan Smyth and Marc-Andre Bergeron, as well as, Alexei Yashin helped stake the Islanders to a 3-2 lead. Yashin blasted a slapshot in the first period for his 14th goal of the season -- his first since January 15th, while Smyth and Bergeron each tallied a goal and an assist.

Following the Montreal game, the Islanders traveled just over 120 miles westward to the city of Ottawa to take on another formidable opponent, the Senators.

Ottawa has had an up-and-down season, but have played well enough to rise to fifth in the Eastern Conference standings. The Senators have earned points in their previous five games, including a 3-2 come-from-behind win against the Rangers on Tuesday. After falling behind 2-0, the Senators rattled off three unanswered goals to defeat the Blueshirts in regulation.

The last time these teams met on December 27th, the Senators ranked last in the Northeast Division standings, but their offense has come alive in the second half of the season. They now rank third in the East in goals for, behind Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Dany Heatley is on pace to reach 100 points for the second year in a row, having amassed 90 in 70 games. Captain Daniel Alfredsson (75 points) and Jason Spezza (73) rank second and third on the team.

The goaltending controversy in Ottawa has also ironed itself out. Ray Emery began the year as the backup, but has since taken over the starting position. With 28 wins, he is well on his way to reaching the 30-win plateau in only his second full season in the NHL.

Chris King and Steve Mears have the call on Bloomberg Radio 1130, while Howie Rose and Billy Jaffe can be seen tonight on FSN NY.
