FLORIDA 8, ISLANDERS 5
Olli Jokinen scored two third-period goals to help the Florida Panthers skate past the Islanders 8-5 at the Bank Atlantic Center Saturday night.
After Jokinen gave the Panthers a 6-4 lead midway through the final period, the Islanders were able to cut the lead to 6-5, but couldn't get the sixth goal as Florida added two empty-netters.
The Panthers were the better team 5-on-5, scoring all their goals at even strength. The Islanders scored three of their goals on the man-advantage.
Ed Belfour picked up the win, stopping 28 shots, while Mike Dunham earned the loss for the Islanders.
Six goals were scored in both the first and third periods of this wide open game in Sunrise, Florida.
The Panthers struck first 1:54 into the game. Jokinen's slapshot rang off the post, but Rostislav Olesz put the rebound past Dunham.
Ryan Smyth got the equalizer with 9:10 to go in the first period on the power play. With a delayed penalty in effect, Mike Sillinger found Smyth in front of the net. Smyth threw it past Belfour for his 34th goal of the season.
Just 2:10 later, Sillinger and Smyth combined again for another goal. Smyth head manned the puck to Sillinger, who busted into the zone on a semi-breakaway. Sillinger let go a wrist shot that got by Belfour for a 2-1 Islanders lead.
Ville Peltonen tied the game at two on a backhand with 4:06 left in the first period.
Sillinger's slapper from the point gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead with 3:04 remaining the opening frame. The Islanders' power play goal was assisted by Trent Hunter and Tom Poti
Only 35 seconds later, the Islanders' defense got caught and Gregory Campbell converted on a 2-on-1 break to even the score at three.
At 7:59 of the second period the Panthers took a 4-3 lead when Juraj Kolnik scored from the slot after Ville Peltonen knocked Dunham over while driving to the net with the puck.
The Islanders capitalized on another power play opportunity to tie the game at four. Sillinger threw the puck back to Bergeron, who blasted it top shelf, 5:16 into the third period.
Jokinen scored two goals in the span of 1:01 to give the Panthers a 6-4 lead. First it was on a wraparound and then a wrister from the slot.
The Islanders cut the lead to 6-5 with a Smyth jam play in front, but that's as close as the Islanders would get.
Jozef Stumpel and Peltonen added empty-netters.
