Snow and Nolan both wish Yashin well as the team moves forward

Islanders General Manager Garth Snow and Head Coach Ted Nolan spoke to reporters via conference call Wednesday morning. Below is an excerpt.

Garth Snow
On how the decision played out:

(Garth Snow) "This decision is something we've had meetings about for some time. We didn't just wake up one morning and it materialized. It's a new beginning for Alexei and the organization. Charles wants to bring the Stanley Cup back to Long Island and everyone in the organization is committed to doing that."

On moving forward:

(Garth Snow) "This decision is good for the organization and Alexei's career. We've come up with a game plan that we've been implementing since I arrived last year. We're looking for guys with high character and grit. Ted and I have been on the same page from the start and we're committed to continuing that going into the free agency period"

On coaching Yashin:

(Ted Nolan) "Everything I heard about Alexei in the off-season was untrue. He's a passionate and good man, and I wish him well, wherever he goes. It's tough to come back from injury, and he couldn't get back to where he was at the beginning of last season. This decision wasn't based on one game or one year. We discussed it with the board and decided it was best for the organization and the player. We'll have to find someone to replace someone of his caliber."

Ted Nolan
On the decision's affect on the team:

(Ted Nolan) "Whenever a captain leaves, it's going to affect the chemistry of the room. It's going to be a different look, and we have a plan in place. This team still has leaders on it like Sillinger, Witt and Hunter, but we still have to wait for the free agency period to end before completely putting it into place heading into training camp."

On speaking to Yashin:

(Garth Snow) "I spoke to Alexei yesterday and told him how much I enjoyed playing with him and how he was first class as a person, once I became general manager. He is going to land on his feet elsewhere and we wish him the best."

On whether Yashin asked to be bought out:

(Garth Snow) "If you know Yash, then you know he wants to play hockey. He's not the type of player who would initiate this. The decision was made by the organization."
