New York Islanders Media Watch

As part of our job, we watch what the media reports on the Orange and Blue. Here's what's being said in the news about the Islanders buying out Alexei Yashin.

(Updated – Thursday, 10:00 AM)

USA Today's A.J. Perez
took a look at how the move impacts the Islanders' roster (click here to read)  and wrote: << That bolsters the team's efforts to keep All-Star forwards Jason Blake and trade deadline-acquisition Ryan Smyth on Long Island. Both can become unrestricted free agents July 1. >>

Dave Caldwell of the New York T
took a quick look at Alexi Yashin's history with the Islanders and how the team's roster might shape up for next season (click here to read)   and wrote: << Yashin, who turns 34 on Nov. 5, helped the Islanders make the playoffs in four of the five seasons he was with the team. But he never scored more than 32 goals in a season, and he was hampered by a sprained knee this past season after he got off to a good start. >>

Newsday's Greg Logan
broke the story first (click here to read) late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning and wrote: << Facing a potential mutiny from Islanders fans, owner Charles Wang bit the bullet and made the decision Tuesday to buy out the remaining four years of captain Alexei Yashin's 10-year contract, Newsday has learned exclusively. Some might view it as the owner admitting a costly mistake, but second-year coach Ted Nolan described it as a chance for a "new beginning" that might restore the fans' faith in the franchise. >>

Newsday columnist Mark Herrmann
also wrote about the topic today (click here to read) and wrote to the fans: << You win. This is, in fact, the biggest victory in years for you if you are an Islanders fan who pleaded with management to do the only sensible thing and buy out Alexei Yashin's iceberg of a contract. >>
has two audio galleries with comments from Garth Snow  and Ted Nolan.

David Kolb of MSG
spoke in his blog about the Islanders decision to buyout Alexei Yashin (click here to read) and wrote:  <<As we woke on the East Coast with a possible Stanley Cup closeout Game 5 in Anaheim looming, the biggest hockey news of the day in New York was the Islanders buying out the remainder of Alexei Yashin's huge contract.>>

On his blog for, XM Radio reporter Paul Provenzano
takes a balanced approach (click here to read) when talking about the buyout. Provenzano wrote: << Yashin managed to put up respectable #'s this season, while struggling through injury. And I've said all along that there aren't too many players in the league with the class and humility that Yashin has. He's a great guy, a skilled player, and will probably help another team out in a non-captain role on the 1st or 2nd line. >>
