LOCAL BOY WITH LOCAL DREAMS
Long Island-born James Marcou is hoping to make some noise at the Islanders Mini-Camp

James Marcou
Born in Kings Park, James Marcou has been an Islanders fan since he learned to walk. Now 18, Marcou is attending the Islanders Prospect Camp before heading to U-Mass Amherst in the fall. Listed at 5-7, Marcou has successfully overcome his small stature with his determination. We spoke to Marcou on Wednesday night.

How did you first get into hockey/Islanders?

"My parents were good friends with Pat Flatley. My mom cut his hair, and I've been an Islanders fan since then. I used to watch the "Flats and Heals Show," which was pretty funny. The best game experience I remember was the Toronto 2002 playoff series. The best part of that series was when there were two fights going on at the same time. Bates and Cairns went at it against Corson and Tucker. You won't see me getting into any fights, but I like to watch."

Talk about your early hockey career.

"I played with the Long Island Royals from mite through bantam. From midgets to juniors I played with the New York Bobcats. I wanted to play some competitive hockey before I went to college, so I went to play for Waterloo in the USHL. It's the best place to go to before college if you're going to go the college route."

What was the reason behind your jump from 32 to 71 points between your first and second year with Waterloo?

"The second year is always easier, especially getting used to being away from home. Getting into the flow the second year was easier. It was also easier to adjust to things like homework."

Give us a self scouting report.

"I'm a small guy, but I compete. I have good vision and would consider myself a playmaker. People often say I'm too small to play, but it just means I need to prove myself. Now, more than anything, it motivates me. With the new NHL, it's all about strength and not how big you are. Martin St. Louis and Brian Gionta are good examples."

What was your decision behind going to U-Mass next year?

"They have a great coaching staff there, and I wanted to get a chance to play right away. U-mass is in a good conference, so it's going to be good competition."

What's it like pulling on the Islanders jersey at prospect camp.

"It's a great feeling. It's kind of like pulling on that USA jersey. When I played for the Under-17 and Under-18 teams, we traveled to tournaments in Slovakia, Germany and Rochester."

What are your goals for this camp?

"I just want to learn as much as possible from Bryan Trottier and some of the other guys. It's a great group of people they have here."
