NYI PARTICIPATE IN SILLER FUNDRAISER

Islanders contribute to annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run

Firefighters carry pictures of the 343 brave firefighters who died on 9/11/01
On one of the most tragic days in history, men and women sacrificed their lives to come to the rescue of those in mortal danger. That is why the Islanders are proud to support The Stephen Siller Foundation, formed in honor of firefighter, Stephen Siller, who took his final heroic steps as he ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center to help save others.

On September 11, 2001, firefighter and father of five Stephen Siller was off-duty and driving towards his three brothers Russ, Frank and George to meet them for a round of golf, when he heard the horror on his scanner. He turned his truck around and headed towards the Towers. Unable to move due to the chaotic traffic at the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Stephen parked his car, strapped on over 75 lbs of firefighter gear and raced, on foot, back to the World Trade Center site to help his fellow firefighters before perishing.

Over 24,000 runners participated in the 6th annual "Tunnel to Towers Run" – recreating Stephen's brave last steps – this past Sunday, September 30th, making Stephen's run almost as large as the NYC marathon. 343 firefighters lined the tunnel holding pictures of their firefighting brothers who died on 9/11.

John Turturro, Oprah, Rudy Giuliani, Bob Beckwith, CBS News, and the New York Islanders are proud advocates for the Stephen Siller Foundation. At this year's event, the Islanders provided inflatables to help in the pre-run festivities. And there was no lack of Islanders fan support, with dozens of Islanders logos seen throughout the event.

Last year, The Stephen Siller Foundation and the Islanders raised over $22,000 for the NYC Cornell's Burn Center, Nassau University Medical Center's Burn Center, and Stony Brook University Hospital's Burn Center. Brendan Witt was proud to present Stephen's brother, Russell Siller with the on-ice check

The Siller Foundation has donated to the Military and Wounded Warriors, Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund, helped re-build firehouses and provide aid to the victims of hurricane Katrina, as well as raised 1.5 million dollars to help build a home for children who are orphaned and abandoned in New.
