From captain Bill Guerin to the homecoming of Bryan Berard to the great crowds for the first four home games, the Islanders have been in the news this week. Here’s a recap of what’s been written by the hockey scribes.
Mark Herrmann of Newsday chatted with Bill Guerin yesterday while he and his family explored the Town of Huntington. In the story, which ran in today’s Newsday, Guerin talks about how his first month in the Orange and Blue. Herrmann wrapped up Guerin’s week by saying << So far, so good, anyway. Here's his own personal hat trick lately: a regular three-goal hat trick at Washington on Thursday, the winning goal with 3.7 seconds left in overtime against the Devils on Saturday, having the second-longest lines (behind only goalie Rick DiPietro) during the season ticket-holders function at Eisenhower Park on Sunday. >>
Up north at theglobeandmail.com, hockey blogger James Mirtle compiled a list of NHL attendances by comparing how teams are drawing this year compared to last year. Out of the 30 teams, the Islanders ranked second in the NHL drawing 3,035 more fans on average then last season.
Over at USAToday.com, AJ Perez sat down with Islanders defensemen Bryan Berard when the team was in the Washington last week for their weekly “Checking in with…” Q&A-format story. In the piece, Berard answers questions to what type of interest he received from other teams over the summer and how this Islanders team is different from the one he left back in 1998-99. Also at USAToday.com, hockey scribe Kevin Allen discussed in his blog which NHL general managers did the best job of diagnosing their problems and fixing them for this season. He put Islanders GM Garth Snow at the very top of his list. Allen writes: << Snow rebuilt the carburetor and the Islanders are firing efficiently on all cylinders. >> Click here to read.
Last week, the Sports Business Journal ran an online story written by Tripp Mickle on how the Islanders have began to open the door on bloggers with the NYI Blog Box. Wrote Mickle: << Section 201 became the “NYI Blog Box” for the night, complete with three desks, a row of media packets and a midlevel view of the ice. Ten bloggers, some wearing team jerseys and hats, scribbled notes and hammered on keyboards, compiling a mixture of analysis and comments to post to their blog. >> Click here to exclusively read the story online.
