BOSSY JOINS CANADA\'S FINEST

The legendary right wing enters Canadian Sports Hall of Fame

Mike Bossy
Last night Islanders legend Mike Bossy was given one of his country's highest honors when he was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. It was an achievement that was well-deserved by the right wing that helped lead the Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cups, with his clutch goal scoring.

"Congratulations go out to Mike on behalf of everyone in our organization," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow. "Mike is one of the all-time great Islanders and one of the best scoring forwards ever. More than that, he is a first-class gentleman and we're so happy he's still an important part of our franchise. This is a wonderful and well-deserved honor for him."

Bossy was a key component of the Islanders' four consecutive Stanley Cups in the 1980s, earning the Conn Smythe Award as the playoff MVP in 1982 after compiling 17-10-27 in 19 contests. He ranks first on the team's all-time playoff goal scoring list with 85. Bossy's career playoff totals of 75 assists and 160 points are both third on the Islanders' all-time lists.

The sniper from Montreal was one of the premier players in the NHL during the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s. In 1981, Bossy became just the second player in NHL history to score 50 goals in 50 games. He finished the 1981 season with 68 goals, just one shy of his record of 69, which he set in 1979.

Bossy's streak of nine consecutive 50-goal seasons stills stands as an NHL record. The seven-time NHL All-Star reached 51 goals and 67 assists in his first NHL season, earning him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's best rookie.

Bossy finished his career with 573 goals, 553 assists and 1126 points. His totals place him first on the team's all-time goals list, third on the assists chart and second on the points list.

All of Bossy's achievements landed him a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991. The Islanders honored Bossy on March 3, 1992 by hanging #22 to the rafters of the Nassau Coliseum.

Bossy - today a vital member of the Islanders' front office - joins Denis Potvin and J.P. Parise as the other former Islanders to be inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.

The other 2007 Canadian Sports Hall of Fame inductees are former CFL star and NFL quarterback Doug Flutie, Olympic ice hockey gold medalist Cassie Campbell, former MLB MVP Larry Walker, Olympic wrestling champion Daniel Igali, Olympic cross-country skiing medalist Beckie Scott as well as two-sport pioneers Sam Jacks and Dr. Robert Steadward.
