STANDINGS: Following last night's 1-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils, the Islanders remain in third place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 10-6-0 for 20 points through 16 games. They are three points behind both the Philadelphia Flyers (18 games) and the New York Rangers (19 games).
With the Islanders having played in a league-low 16 games, they sit in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with their 20 points. The St. Louis Blues are the only other team in the league to have played in just 16 contests.
SPECIAL TEAMS: The Islanders power play ranks tenth in the NHL with a 20.9 percent conversion rate. On the road, the team has been scoring at a 28.0 percent clip, which is fourth best in the NHL.
The penalty kill now ranks sixth in the NHL as they have been negating 85.5 percent of their opponents power plays.
Last night versus the Devils, the Islanders' power play went 0-for-2, while the penalty kill went 2-2.
JO'S BIG SHOT: By scoring three goals in the last four games, Josef Vasicek now leads the Islanders' scoring attacked with seven goals. What's more impressive is that he's netted those goals by only taking 19 shots. Last night against the Devils, he scored his short-handed goal on his only shot of the game. That gives the first-year Islander a NHL-best 36.8 shooting percentage.
JOVA PART II: Josef Vasicek has now scored seven goals on the season through 16 games. Last season in 63 games between Carolina and Nashville, the two-way forward only scored six goals.
JOVA PART III: Vasicek's goal last night was of the short-handed variety. He now has two shorties on the season, which are not only both the Islanders as a team have scored this season, but the only two he has scored in his seven-year NHL career.
GETTING IN THE WAY: Brendan Witt leads the team and is eighth in the NHL in blocked shots with 47. Last season, he finished fifth the league with a total of 207.
I'LL TAKE IT: Mike Sillinger once again leads the Islanders with a 56.1 faceoff winning percentage. He also ranks fifth in the NHL by taking 34.3 percent of the Islanders faceoffs.
