The Islanders point man gives his thoughts on the struggling PP – Islanders vs. Boston: 7 pm, TV: FSN NY, Radio: Bloomberg 1130


"I feel like every time we don't score on the power play we've let the team down," repeated Islanders power play point man Chris Campoli to reporters prior to tonight's matchup against the Boston Bruins.

That's in essence what both power play units have felt over the past ten games, in which the man-advantage has converted at a rate of less than 8%.

"We talked to the guys this morning and reminded them that the first few weeks we had the top power play in the league," said assistant coach Gerard Gallant. "We have to work hard, get pucks to the net and just get back to basics."

With the power play in a multi-game slump, the players appear to be feeling the pressure. The sticks seemed to be gripped tighter and the players have become more unselfish.

"There are so many talented guys on the ice," said Campoli, who along with the rest of the team faces Boston again tonight. "I want to try and get the puck to these guys, but it's clear that we have to just start shooting. That's what we did when the power play was working. The points would throw pucks to the net and the forwards would crash the net for rebounds. We're just not getting enough shots on goal."

Case in point was in yesterday's 2-1 loss to Boston, when the Islanders power play failed generate much offense. The most noticeable instance came at the start of the third period when the Islanders received 1:41 of 5-on-3 power play time.

Despite the significant advantage, the Islanders failed to get a shot on goal. Bryan Berard attempted a shot from the high slot, but it sailed wide, ringed around the boards and exited the offensive zone.

"Once we couldn't get anything going the first 20 seconds, we started to force passes that weren't there," said Campoli about the two-man advantage. "One thing that surprised Bryan and me was the amount of pressure the high guy was putting on us. Axelsson stayed lower in the zone, but Sturm prevented us from passing back and forth on the point. That threw us off, but we're prepared for it tonight."

Campoli spent over 15 minutes discussing the power play situation with reporters this morning, but his major stressing point was that: "We need to stop over analyzing the power play. We know what it takes for it to be successful, since we had it going at the beginning of the year. We need to stop making the perfect play and just get pucks to the net. It's that simple. Special teams are huge in today's game and we have to get it together if we want to be successful. It's going to come around."

Having seen the Bruins yesterday, the Islanders power play knows what it's up against and is determined to right the ship tonight in the rematch at the Nassau Coliseum.
