POST GAME STATS 411

Your stop for quick stats on the Islanders the morning after each game.

 
STANDINGS: Today, the Islanders have a record of 15-13-2 for 32 points after 30 games. With last night’s 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes, the Islanders moved into a tie for fourth place n the Atlantic Division with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Islanders and Penguins meet tomorrow night at the Nassau Coliseum.

The Islanders are trailing the first-place New Jersey Devils by five points in the division. The Orange and Blue are three points behind the second-place New York Rangers and two behind the third-place Philadelphia Flyers. 

Overall in the Eastern Conference, the Islanders currently sit in a three-way tied eighth place, with both the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Toronto Maple Leafs.





WHEN LEADING AFTER 2: The Islanders are one of seven teams to have a perfect record when leading after two periods. The Islanders are 11-0-0 when taking the lead into the third period.




PK IS OK: The Islanders’ penalty kill currently ranks ninth in the NHL by successfully defending off 84.5 percent of their opponents’ power plays. At home, the Islanders are tied for sixth in the NHL with an 85.7 percent success rate. On the road, they are twelfth in the league with an 83.1 percent success rate.




BLOCKING SHOTS: The defensive pairing of Brendan Witt and Radek Martinek has a knack for blocking shots. Witt ranks eighth in the NHL with 75 blocked shots while Martinek ranks fourteenth with 62. Last night versus Phoenix, Martinek blocked a game-high four shots.



HUNTING DOWN OPPONENTS: Trent Hunter plays a mean game. The Red Deer, AB native currently ranks fourth in the NHL with 100 hits. Last season, he finished fifth in the NHL and second on the Islanders with 246 hits.




A PRO AT FACEOFFS: Faceoff specialist Mike Sillinger is up to his old tricks again. The 17-year veteran continues to climb the NHL faceoff charts. Sillinger leads the Islanders and now ranks tied for eleventh in the NHL with a 55.4 faceoff winning percentage. He has ranked in the top-15 among the top NHL faceoff leaders in the past six seasons. Last season, Sillinger ranked fourth in the NHL with a 58.8 faceoff winning percentage.




I'LL TAKE IT: The Islanders are using Sillinger’s faceoff prowess to good use. Sillinger ranks fifth in the NHL by taking 35.4 percent of the Islanders’ faceoffs. Last season, Sillinger ranked fourth in the NHL by taking 35.1 percent of the Islanders’ faceoffs.



 
JO'S BIG SHOT:  Josef Vasicek leads the Islanders' scoring attack with nine goals. Jo's netted those goals by only taking 36 shots. That gives the first-year Islander a 23.7 shooting percentage, which is good for third best in the NHL.
