READY FOR THE WEST

The Islanders embark on their longest stretch away from home, playing five games in nine days – Islanders at Colorado, TV: FSN NY 2, Radio: Bloomberg 1130

Bill Guerin
After playing in their 22nd home game of the year in 39 games to start the season, it was only time before the Islanders would see some significant time on the road.

Thanks to the rivalry-focused NHL schedule (changing next season), the Islanders have had to travel out of the Eastern Time Zone for only a handful of games since 2005-06. This season that number is a total of five games, four of which will be completed over the next two weeks. They begin their trip tomorrow, when they meet the Colorado Avalanche for the first time since December 17, 2005.

The Islanders also make stops in Edmonton (Jan. 7), Vancouver (Jan. 8), Calgary (Jan. 11) and Ottawa (Jan. 13) during their upcoming five-game road trip.

"Sometimes there is nothing like a good, old road trip," said head coach Ted Nolan. "The guys get a chance to go out and have dinner together and hang out with each other, especially since we have days off in between the games. I'm looking forward to the trip.

“This is prime time for hockey. Right after Christmas, the New Year begins and so does the stretch run for the playoffs. This is what it's all about and why we play."

The Islanders will try not to look back at last year's West Coast trip, which saw them go 1-3-0 to start the season.

"It was a different terrain last year," said Ted. "In Phoenix last year it was about 110 degrees. This trip will probably be minus-30. It's good to play some teams you haven't played before, especially in Western Canada. Going to places where it's snowing and twenty-below will bring us back to what we're all here for, and that's to play the game. I'm looking forward to the atmosphere in the arenas."

ALL ABOARD

Injured defensemen Radek Martinek and Aaron Johnson will make the West Coast trip with the team.

"Radek really wants to play, but we have to make sure that he's good before he goes back in," said Ted. "Aaron has made some good recovery, so he'll come on the road trip with us. But before he plays with us, he might do some conditioning with Bridgeport. But he's getting close."
