MAKING A KILLING

The Islanders' consistent penalty killing unit visits Edmonton tonight at 9 pm – Islanders (20-16-4) at Edmonton (18-21-4), TV: FSN NY, Radio: Bloomberg 1130

For the first time since March 13, 2003, the Islanders will travel westward to Edmonton, Alberta, when they take on the Oilers, tonight at 9 pm ET. This is the second game of the Islanders' five-game road trip that sees them visit five Canadian cities in nine days. The Islanders look to continue to rack up the points tonight, having earned points in seven of their last eight games (6-1-2).

On Saturday in Denver, the Islanders excellent penalty kill negated all four Colorado Avalanche power plays. The John Chabot-run man-down unit currently ranks sixth in the NHL with an 85.9 percent success rate. At home, the Islanders penalty kills ranks fourth in the NHL at 87.2.

In the team's last ten games, the Islanders have only allowed four power play goals in 43 opportunities. That's good for a 93.0 success rate.

Four Islanders will be making their return to Edmonton having played for the Oilers at one time in their career. Bill Guerin (1998-2001), Mike Comrie (2001-03), Miroslav Satan (1996-97) and Marc-Andre Bergeron (2003-04, 06-07) all skated for Edmonton's Orange and Blue. Satan, Bergeron and Comrie all began their careers with Edmonton

While Rick DiPietro may not have ever played for Edmonton, he has a good history playing against the Oilers. In three contests against the Western foe, DiPietro has gone 3-0-0 with a 1.55 GAA. His first NHL win came in Edmonton in a 4-2 decision on February 16, 2001.

  • Marc-Andre Bergeron has recorded three power play goals and an assist since being inserted back into the lineup over the past four games.
  • Richard Park has tallied one goal and seven assists over his last seven games.

WESTERN ROAD TRIP

The Islanders are playing their second game tonight of a five-game, 11-day road trip. The Islanders fell to the Colorado Avalanche in overtime on Saturday night to start the trip. After tonight's game in Edmonton the Islanders will visit Vancouver (January 8 – 10:00 pm), Calgary (January 11 – 9:00 pm) and Ottawa (January 13 – 7:00 pm) before returning home to face the Montreal Canadiens on January 15. In total, the Islanders will travel an estimated 7,300 miles total. In franchise history, the Islanders have gone on 31 road trips of five-or-more games. The Orange and Blue have gone .500 or better in 13 of those trips, including five of the last seven dating back to 2001-02.
