Islanders GM talks to Kelly Hrudey and Jeff Marek on DP, Okposo and more

Garth Snow
Islanders general manager Garth Snow yesterday joined former Islanders netminder Kelly Hrudey and co-host Jeff Marek on an all-new "Hockey Night in Canada" radio show.

Snow chatted about a wide variety of topics and gave insight to the future of the team, including highly touted and newly signed rookie Kyle Okposo, the current state of the organization and what the outlook will be, come the trading deadline. Below is a transcription of some highlights of the conversation. To listen to the entire segment click here.

On Rick DiPietro's play...
"We go as our goaltender goes and it was like that last year. We feel we have a top goalie in the league. We go to different buildings in the West and commentators come up to me saying, ‘we didn't realize how good your goalie was.' We knew what we had when we came to an agreement with him and knew it was just a matter of time before the rest of the hockey world knew how good Rick was."

On Kyle Okposo's game and comparisons to other NHL players...
"You hear Shane Doan, Jarome Iginla. I think that's the biggest mistake. You just want Kyle Okposo to turn into Kyle Okposo. Even in my career, although it wasn't as shining as a lot of other goalies, you try and be your own person. Kyle was a man that was playing with boys at the college level. Now he's going to take the next step to be a professional. Kyle will practice Thursday in Bridgeport and they have a game in Binghamton on Friday night."

On where the team is headed...
"The fun part of the journey is getting to the top. We're looking to build this thing the right way and at the end of the day hopefully be at the top of the mountain. It will be fun to watch everything evolve just as it has been fun to watch Rick evolve since 2001 to one of the top goaltenders in the league."

On the upcoming trade deadline...
"Make no mistake, Charles (Wang) will do whatever it takes to bring a Stanley Cup to Long Island. He is willing to spend, but it has to be for a team that's going to be a Stanley Cup potential type team. What better message to send to the fans, to the players in our locker room, that essentially we are a small market team, but he is willing to spend the extra resources to bring a Stanley Cup to Long Island."
