NYI BLOG BOX GOING STRONG

14 bloggers blogging the Islanders as innovative program continues to take shape

We’re halfway through the 2007-08 NHL season and the NYI Blog Box is not only up and running, but it’s driving with a head full of steam through the Islanders and hockey world.

After the Islanders first introduced the NYI Blog Box presented by HockeyBuzz.com (click here for the media’s reaction), the team has received literally hundreds among hundreds of applications. When the season started, there were 12 blogs that were selected. Since October, two more blogs have been added to bring the total to 14 and the team continually looks for the next insightful blog to add to the group.

But adding blogs hasn’t been the only way the NYI Blog Box has grown in its first six months of existence. Bloggers who attend the game are now welcomed into the Islanders’ locker room following every game and some of their questions make Rick DiPietro, Bill Guerin and Ted Nolan take notice.

“Blogging as a function is actually the voice of the people, so, as Islander fans, we're serving not only to entertain the fan base, but also to represent it,” said Dee Karl, author of the Unique Perspectives of the 7th Women blog. “It's more work than I ever expected, but more fun than I could have ever imagined. It's bridged the gap between ‘us’ and ‘them,’ and really has made us ‘all Islanders.’”

Members of the NYI Blog Box have also took the initiative on expending the horizons of their blogs as Tom Liodice of The Tiger Track goes up I-95 to Bridgeport to take in a few Sound Tigers games and Ken Dick secured media passes to University of Minnesota games to see Kyle Okposo for his Okposo Net blog. Although that trip didn’t go as planned for Ken, it’s evidence that the NYI Blog Box Bloggers are trying to break new ground in more than one way, while providing Islanders fans with more coverage on their team.

And since the season has started the media attention hasn’t gone away for the NYI Blog Box. Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated and Tripp Mickle of The Sports Business Journal each wrote feature articles on the phenomenon.

Meanwhile the group itself has bonded over the first few months. There hasn’t been a game that at least three bloggers haven’t attended and the group of regulars have formed a friendship.

The Islanders are always looking to add to the NYI Blog Box and if you want to apply, click here to find out how. Remember, we’re looking for blogs with a unique angle that’s different from the rest!
