Tomas Marcinko scored a goal and two assists in the Islander Rookies 5-3 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Tony Romano, Tyler Haskins, Anton Klementyev and Matt Martin all scored for the Islanders.
The Islanders opened the scoring four minutes into the first period when Romano converted on an odd man rush with Pascal Morency. Romano set the play at the blue-line, dropping a pass to Morency, who snapped a low shot to the University of Saskatchewan net-minder, Jeff Harvey’s right pad. Harvey made the initial save but the rebound came right to Romano at the post where he banged in the loose puck, giving the Islanders the 1-0 lead. The Huskies would tie the score at one with 4:38 remaining in the opening frame when Steve DaSilva fired a one-time shot over the glove of Koskinen. Chad Greenan and Evan Schafer had the assists on the play.
Haskins would regain the lead for the Islanders 23 seconds into the second period. Tomas Marcinko caused a turnover at the University of Saskatchewan blue-line and sprung Haskins with a lead pass in alone on Reekie. Haskins pulled the puck to his forehand and fired it over the Huskie goalie’s glove to give the Islanders the 2-1 lead. Saskatchewan would answer two minutes later when DaSilva snapped a shot past Koskinen’s blocker for his second tally of the contest, tying the score at 2-2. Klementyev would regain the Islander lead with 1:46 remaining in the middle frame. Marcinko and Klementyev played catch along the point before the Russian defenseman blasted a slap shot from the middle point position through the Huskie goaltender for the 3-2 Islander lead.
In the third, Martin would put the Islanders ahead 4-2, redirecting a centering pass from Sarnia Sting teammate, Justin DiBenedetto. The goal came on the power-play with 13:47 remaining in the period. Marcinko would put the Islanders ahead 5-2, ripping a one-time feed from the top of the right circle over the Saskatchewan goalie’s glove. Romano had the second assist on Marcinko’s first goal of the preseason to close the game’s scoring at 5-2. The Huskies would tack one one more goal in the final minute of regulation time.
The Islanders will travel to Edmonton tomorrow in preparation for their game against the Oilers. Face-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. (ET). The following night, the Islanders will visit the Calgary Flames at the Saddledome with the opening face-off set for 9 p.m. (ET).
On Wednesday, Sept. 23 the Islanders will play their first home preseason game at the Nassau Coliseum against the New Jersey Devils at 7 p.m. For tickets or information about the game, contact the Islanders front office at (516) 501-6700.
