The New York Islanders teamed up with the North Shore Animal League on Wednesday, Mar. 24, to kick off the shelter's 10th annual Americas Tour for Life. Throughout the 10 years, the North Shore Animal League has saved and serviced over 5,000 dogs from several puppy mills in 17 states and 23 different cities around the United States.

Last year this animal rights project saved 1,000 dogs and puppies from unfriendly environments and this year hope to better those numbers by reaching their set goal of over 1,100 animals. One of vehicles is headed to California and will work its way across the nation while another travel to Florida, touring the south and eventually moving their way back up north. The trip will cover an overall distance of 12,000 miles.

Wives Cassandra DiPietro and Lindsey Meyer as well as girlfriends Lacey Cadle (Blake Comeau), Amanda Demers (Rob Schremp) and Moa Sjloander (Frans Neilsen) were on hand to help unload the first truck on this project tour.

“The North Shore Animal League is so delighted that we have Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro and his wife Cassandra DiPietro that have been great supporters over the past few years,” North Shore Animal League President John Stevenson.  “Since their first event Cassandra has become even more involved with the animal league and their operations.”

“The first time the DiPietros participated in an event with the North Shore Animal League they joined us at our dog academy celebrity gala where they brought their dog Roxy. Basically what the event entails, is we ask celebrities to make videos with their pets and they send them in for best ‘dogumentary’ and the DiPietros actually won the award for best tail wagging comedy,” Stevenson said.

“Since their first event with us Cassandra especially has done an incredible job. She comes out and helps us with our rescues. Not only are we sending out our first vehicle for our 10th annual tour for life but we also had one of our trucks come in today with over 50 dogs that were rescued from a puppy mill out in the Midwest,” Vice President of Communications at the North Shore Animal League, Devera Lynn said.

Demers, the girlfriend of Schremp, explains the experience, “We are all dog lovers.  We all have pets of our own and wanted to come down and help out.  This is our way of giving back to the animal community. It really touches home a lot more having a pet of our own.”
