The scoreboard hanging high above Nassau Coliseum’s ice told Islander fans that the Orange Team won the Orange vs. Blue Scrimmage on July 10, but the scoreboard off the ice revealed the biggest winner of the evening: the Islanders Children’s Foundation.

The I.C.F. raised in excess of $25,000 to be used in support of its mission of helping children on Long Island in the areas of health, education and youth hockey development.

“The Orange vs. Blue Scrimmage was a tremendous hit,” said Ann Rina, the Islanders Community Relations Manager. “Saturday’s event kept fans thinking about the upcoming Islanders season, while raising money for the Islanders Children’s Foundation.”

The Islanders Children’s Foundation was created in the summer of 2003 and, since January 2007, has raised more than $1 million for countless children in Long Island and around the world.

The Foundation typically generates the majority of its funds during the hockey season, when fans are consistently heading to Islanders games and are seeing the team in the news on a regular basis. Summer months can sometimes create a lull for charities that are based around sports teams, as “out of sight, out of mind” can be detrimental. Raising this much money in the middle of the NHL off-season is a huge statement for the I.C.F.

“Most of our fundraising events happen in season and to be able to create an event that draws attention to hockey during the summer while raising money for the foundation is an important task,” said Rina. “It is always important for a foundation to maintain fundraising throughout the entire year.”

In addition to supporting independent, Long Island-based charities throughout the year, the I.C.F supports its own programs like Islanders Hockey Academy, Lighthouse Tournaments, Islanders Inspire and Islanders Holiday Hospital Visit Shopping Event. Recent external beneficiaries of the I.C.F. include: Stephen Siller “Let Us Do Good” Children’s Foundation (New York City), John Theissen Foundation (Wantagh), Lindenhurst Special Education PTA, Long Island Sled Hockey Inc. and Mary Haven Center of Hope (Port Jefferson), among numerous others.
