Video | Photos caught up with forward Kyle Okposo while he was working with campers at the Islanders official practice facility, Iceworks. Kyle talked about his summer and how is getting ready for the upcoming season.

On his summer…
It’s been really good. Relaxing. A lot of working out, but a lot of down time and just kind of hanging out and recovering. I’ve just been lounging around at home. I’m a pretty big home body so I just enjoy the time on the couch or with friends and just hang out.

On spending time with University of Minnesota skaters and friends…
I have. We have a group of five guys I work out with. We have been skating quite a bit. Guys like Zach Parise, Drew Stafford, Casey Borer, Jordan Schroeder, Lee Goring, Brandon Bochenski. A few names like that.

On what it’s like playing with them…
Well, it’s great. It’s always high intensity. Our group is very competitive and so when we play games it’s for real. There’s no hitting or anything, but it can get a little feisty out there, so that part of it is definitely good.

On his workout regimen…
It’s five days a week. We’re going to start skating here probably three days a week. We started this week actually, but I’m out here, so skate three days a week and work out five days a week.

On how he prepares physically and emotionally for the season…
Well you got to go into it relaxed. Obviously, the first few games you’re amped up, you’re ready to play, but the season, it’s a long season and you have to keep an even keel throughout. You’re going to go through, hopefully a lot of highs and not too many lows, but there’s going to be some of both so you have to know how to cope with both situations.

On being a leader in the locker room…

I’m not going to change who I am. I’m not the biggest talker. If there is something I feel needs to be said, I’ll say it, but I just try and let my play do the talking. I want to have a better season this year and try and get this team over the hump.

On calling Brock Nelson
I just said congratulations. It’s obviously a thrill when you get drafted. Being from Minnesota, he’s from Warroad, it’s obviously a thrill so I’m sure that he was happy to get drafted and hear from me so I just said congratulations.
