The New York Islanders have acquired James Wisniewski from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a conditional third round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Wisniewski, 26, finished second among Ducks defensemen in scoring and seventh on the team with a career-high 30 points (three goals, 27 assists) in 69 games last season. The Canton, Michigan native also led Anaheim in blocked shots with 102, ranked second on the team with 129 hits and finished fourth among skaters in average ice time at 24:20.

“We see James as a key addition to our team and we feel our fans will connect with his style of play,” said Islanders General Manager Garth Snow. “He is a solid puck-moving defenseman who can bring an added element of toughness to our blue-line.”

Wisniewski, a 5’11, 197 pound defenseman, has split his pro career between the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks, playing in a total of 254 games. He has totaled 97 points (17 goals, 80 assists) with 264 penalty minutes. Chicago’s fifth round selection (156th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft has also posted 70 points (17 goals, 53 assists) in 139 AHL games with the Norfolk Admirals and Rockford IceHogs.

Wisniewski made his professional debut with Norfolk in the 2004-05 season, after completing a four-year Junior career with the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League. In his final season with Plymouth, Wisniewski was named the OHL and Canadian Major Junior Defenseman of the Year, and was named to both the OHL and Canadian Major Junior First All-Star Teams.
