SPORTS MARKETING WORKSHOP

High school students enrolled in business and/or sports marketing classes can attend workshop and an Islanders game on November 17.

SPORTS MARKETING WORKSHOP
If you have ever wondered what it would be like to work for a professional sports franchise, which is home to an exciting fast-paced environment, hosts an wide array of entertainment opportunities throughout the hockey season and different marketing campaigns are put to the test, then signing up for the Islanders Sports Marketing Workshop may be the perfect introduction.

On November 17, local high school students enrolled in business and marketing courses will arrive at the Coliseum at 9 a.m. to attend a lecture on Sports Marketing. They will learn what it is like working for a sports franchise from one of the New York Islanders top level management and they will receive a private viewing of the Islanders morning skate as well as a behind the scenes tour of the Nassau Coliseum all just starting at $25 per person.

Students and teachers who attend the workshop will all receive a ticket to that night’s Islanders game versus the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Mark Albin, a teacher at Lawrence High School, has brought his students to the workshop for the last few years because he teaches a class elective on sports and entertainment marketing.

“In terms of the program, I like the fact that you get people who are in the position to give my kids a little more insight into how the franchise is operated, how the marketing takes place, who is in charge of what and how things get accomplished,” Albin said. “I find that a great aspect of the program because my students pretty much get a thorough understanding of the business from people who are doing the job on a daily basis.”

In most districts on Long Island school started on Tuesday, so by the time the November workshop comes, students have had the time to learn a lot about business marketing. While the students may have learned the coursework, the workshop helps show the students how what they’ve learned applies in a real life situation.

“At the workshop, the speakers talk about the things the players are doing, the scheduling there, and that I think is the most important thing for my students to understand,” Albin said. “I actually do similar projects in class, having the kids run a franchise, and it’s nice that they see that everything I’m teaching them, in terms of real life experience, is there when we go and see the Islanders and the speakers tell them the same things that we talk about in class.”

Since he first brought his class to the Sports Marketing Workshop a couple of years back, some of Albin’s students have told him they hope to begin a career in the sports industry. While many of his student’s have yet to go off to college, Albin hopes to hear about his students’ future in the industry.

“I think my students have gotten a great experience from the workshop. They’ve got a nice knowledge base that they can apply and do apply to other projects throughout the course of the year, so a lot of times they will refer back to that field trip. In class, we discuss what has come forth from that trip and it does go in to the applied knowledge for the rest of the year.”

Overall, Albin thinks the workshop is a huge success in his classroom because he periodically uses the workshop as an example throughout the remainder of the course, but it also gives the students a real-life example of the hard work they need to put in to their future to be successful.

“I think the best part of the process is that everybody at the workshop seems to be there to educate the kids. I like that people are willing to discuss what it is that they do, especially going in to their personal background because I discuss what it takes to get to that point, but a lot of kids don’t understand that you have to put in a lot of grunt time to get to a point where you can actually make an impact. So I think that part is best served in terms of my interest.”
