A jack of all trades, Butch Goring is ready for his newest role surrounding the Islanders organization

BUTCHIE IN THE BOOTH
Butch Goring walked into Iceworks in Syosset today to hear more than one person say “Congratulations, Butch!”

He thanked everyone who wished him well, and wearing a big smile, he watched the Islanders practice from the stands and upstairs with some scouts and Islanders General Manager Garth Snow.

Goring has been in many roles around the New York Islanders organization; player, coach, reporter, and now, as the color analyst for Islanders broadcasts on MSG.

“I’m very excited to be a around the hockey team even more so than the last couple of years,” Goring said. “I feel very good that the crew I am going to be working with is so good (at what they do because) they will be able to give me all the help that I will need. I am very thankful for the opportunity that Madison Square Garden and the New York Islanders are giving me at this point in time.”

Goring has been with MSG since 2007 and has been a part of Islanders broadcasts and “Hockey Night Live.”

Award winning play-by-play man Howie Rose is Goring’s partner, and will be a big help to Goring in his new role.

“I can’t think of a better person to break into this side of the business than with Howie Rose,” Goring said. “He is a terrific person, a true professional, and certainly is going to aide me in my abilities to be involved.”

As a player, Goring came to the Islanders in March of 1980 after nine years with the Los Angeles Kings. His 19 goals in 21 playoff games that season helped spur the Islanders historical four-cup run. When his playing days were over he took on the role of coach, with the Bruins and the Islanders at the NHL level and several minor league teams. Then he joined the broadcasting side of hockey.

“I love the game,” Goring said. “And, I have a passion for the New York Islanders. So to be more involved, this is about as close as you can get other than being a part of the team itself. So I’m excited to watch their progress as a fan each and every day.”

It’s the day-in-day-closeness of following the team that Goring looks forward to the most.

“I didn’t really go to a lot of the practices over the years because it wasn’t really a necessity for me,” Goring said. “Now, with the day-to-day stuff that’s involved, I will get a lot closer to what the team is all about. I will get to converse with the players a little more regularly (as well as) getting to talk to the coaching staff more regularly. Those are all things that are going to be relevant in the new position. I’m excited. I think the Islanders are going to be better than they were last year. It’s going to be a good year.”
