Okposo skates in full gear

Islanders forward Kyle Okposo has not seen one minute of ice time this season. Sidelined with a torn labrum which he suffered on September 23, Okposo underwent shoulder surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in early October.

Today, prior to the Islanders practice at the Coliseum, Okposo took the ice in full gear for the first time.

“I felt really good,” Okposo said. “It was good to get back on the ice and to get back in the room here with all the guys.”

Sitting at home while your team is playing, and in the Islanders case, struggling is not an easy thing for Okposo to swallow. He said watching has been the hardest part of dealing with his injury.

“I don’t like watching my own team play,” Okposo said. “It’s frustrating. You know that it’s completely out of your control.”

Undoubtedly, Interim head coach Jack Capuano is happy to see the star forward getting closer and closer to returning.

“He’s got a great deal of experience at such a young age,” Capuano said. “He plays a lot of minutes, gives you another leader and character guy in the room, and on top of that he’s a good player that can add some offense to your hockey team.”

Katie Strang of Newsday tweeted that she also saw Okposo doing pushups in the locker room hallway to test the strength of his shoulder.

Interim head coach Jack Capuano said that he did not know the time frame for when he will be back, but that it was good to see him out on the ice.

“For a guy that’s been out as long as he’s been out, it has to be a good feeling for him,” Capuano said.

While he hasn’t really had the opportunity to know the winger, Caupano said they have met for “a cup of coffee” to see how everything was going.
