Moulson on tap for three more years
Just one week ago, rumors of a Matt Moulson trade spread like wildfire, even after he outwardly commented about his commitment to the New York Islanders franchise. Then at the close of business on Thursday, the Islanders leading goal scorer officially inked a three-year contract extension.

“I’m extremely excited to be a part of the team for the next three years,” Moulson said. “I love this organization. I love the guys that are a part of it. I’m just happy I’m not going anywhere.”

Signing the contract was extremely important to Moulson. It means he’ll get the opportunity to continue working with a team where he has built a strong bond.

“We’re a tight bunch of guys,” Moulson said. “We’re like a family. It’s tough to leave people like that. I love the fans, love the area. I love Long Island. So this is somewhere that I wanted to be, somewhere my wife wanted to be and we’re just extremely excited to be able to be here for the next three years.”

That closeness between the players is what makes this signing even more special. As players and teammates, they depend on each other to keep working hard to move the team in the right direction and to hopefully in the not-to-distant future, bring the Stanley Cup back to Long Island.

“We want to win for each other,” Moulson said. “We’re like a family inside that locker room. Obviously winning is a lot more fun, but when it’s with guys you’re close with, it’s even more special. We’re never going to lose hope, we’re never going to stop working and I think we’re just growing closer and closer each day.”

While Moulson is clearly excited, this news could not come at a more important time for the Islanders franchise. With the constant talks about rebuilding and a season that has not gone the way most people within the organization or the fan base had pictured during preseason, the signing of Moulson shows the dedication of Islanders management to improve the team and continue moving towards playoff contention.

“Hopefully I can just be part of a group of guys that gets this team back into the win column and back in to the winning tradition of the Islanders,” Moulson said. “I’m just honored and thankful to be a part of that. We still have a lot of games to play this season. And I’ve worked on a lot of things to get wins this season. So every single day, for everyone on the team, hopefully we can just continue to grow and mature as players and as a team to develop something special.”

Currently Moulson has 17 goals this season, but with 33 games left in the season, he hopes to top his career-best 30 goals from last year. That stat is one he is proud of, but as many of his goals are scored from the gritty areas just outside the paint, he recently said a lot of credit should be shared with his linemates John Tavares and PA Parenteau.

“For myself personally, I rely on that chemistry, knowing where guys are and guys know where I am to be successful on the ice,” Moulson said. “Johnny, PA and I have had the opportunity to play with each other a lot this year and we seem to have that chemistry where we know where each other are. Those guys make some great plays and sometimes it’s a lot easier for me to have shots and put them in from the front of the net after they’ve made some pretty difficult plays. So that’s definitely, all of our success, all three of us, we work hard and want to get this teams wins.”

Moulson’s brewing excitement is clearly visible, but after the All Star break, you’ll be sure to see a lot of other smiling faces inside the Islanders locker room as the team realizes they’ve locked in one of their shining stars for the next three years.
