Brothers-in-law battle it out

Brothers-in-law battle it out
Matt Moulson and Jonathan Quick will be reunited on Saturday night when the New York Islanders take on the Los Angeles Kings at Nassau Coliseum. Brothers-in-law by marriage (their wives are sisters), Moulson and Quick actually shared an apartment this past summer.

When the Islanders flew West earlier this season, Moulson spent a lot of time with the Quick family. He even enjoyed a good home-cooked meal.

But like any family-friendly rivalry, the Islanders second leading scorer and the Kings number one goaltender had fun jabbing at each other after practice Friday afternoon. Moulson joked that he only visited the Quick family so that he could see his niece, and that it had nothing to do with seeing Jonathan.

Quick knew that there would be a possibility of Moulson calling to return the favor and invite the goaltender to dinner, but he said, “I don’t know. If we do, I don’t know if he’ll slip something in my chicken. We’ll see. I might have to bring my own meal if I do.”

All teasing aside, Moulson said, “We’re really close with their family, especially in the summer. He’s a good friend and he’s a great guy.”

And this summer, the professional athletes liked to keep the competition where it belongs... on the ice.

“We skate together all summer,” Quick said. “I think I have a pretty good read on him, but I think he knows where my weak spots are. So it should be interesting.”

Quick’s 26 wins (in 43 games) this season, have led to the Milford, CT native's outstanding stats. With a 2.10 goals against average and .923 save percentage, he ranks among the top goalies in the league.

“He’s a great goalie,” Moulson said. “I was hoping he was going to play last night (against the Rangers) so we wouldn't have to face him, but he’ll be in net against us.”

Despite Quick’s stats, Moulson said he has had some luck scoring against his brother-in-law, his first goal against coming on Oct. 12, 2009 at Nassau Coliseum.

“I ended the summer scoring about four against him, so I got off the ice after that,” Moulson said. “I was hoping it would carry into the season, but it didn’t work the first time we met. Hopefully it works tomorrow night.”

According to Quick, he wouldn’t rule out a goal from Moulson, especially since he’s recorded 21 goals in 58 games this season.

“He’s a great goal scorer,” Quick said. “He’s a great player. As far as playing against him as a team, we need to strap it on defensively, be strong in front of the net, because that’s where he likes to play. That’s where a lot of the guys on their team like to play. So it’s going to be a tough game. I look forward to it.”

Even though Moulson was happy to get that NHL goal against Quick last season, the Kings goalie jabbed back saying, “When he scored a couple years ago, I told him that I let him score.”
