The Portland Winterhawks forward picked up nine points (7 goals, 2 assists) in four games this past week

Niederreiter named WHL Player of the Week

CALGARY, AB. – The WHL Player of the Week is forward Nino Niederreiter of the Portland Winterhawks.

Niederreiter picked up nine points, scoring seven goals and two assists in four games this past week, helping the Winterhawks to a 3-1-0-0 record

On Tuesday, March 1st, the Winterhawks were in Kennewick to face the Tri-City Americans.  Niederreiter scored two goals, two assists and was named the games 1st star as the Winterhawks downed the Ams’ 6-5.  On Friday, March 4th, the Winterhawks welcomed the Seattle Thunderbirds to the Rose Garden in Portland.  Niederreiter scored his second hat-trick of the season, finding the net three times in the ‘Hawks 9-1 win over the ‘Tbirds.  He was also named the games 3rd Star.  The next night, Saturday, March 5th, the Winterhawks were in Vancouver to take on the Giants.  Niederrreiter scored one goal and was named the games 1st Star in the Winterhawks 5-0 win over the Giants.  The Winterhawks wrapped up their busy week in Chilliwack on Sunday facing the Bruins.  Niederreiter picked up one goal in the ‘Hawks 6-2 loss at the hands of the Bruins.

Niederrreiter is currently on a five game goal scoring streak and has collected 61 points (36 goals, 25 assists) in just 49 games this season.  The Winterhawks have won 16 of their last 20 games and currently sit first in the WHL Western Conference with a 45-18-0-3 record for 93 points.

Niederreiter, an 18 year-old from Chur, Switzerland, is playing his second season with the Winterhawks who made the Swiss stand-out the second overall pick in the 2009 CHL Import Draft.  The New York Islanders selected Niederreiter in the 1st round – 5th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft and played nine NHL games with the Islanders before returning to the Winterhawks this season.

The WHL has also nominated Lucas Gore of the Chilliwack Bruins for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award.  Gore posted a 4-0-0-0 record this past week with one shut-out, stopping 120 of 124 shots faced for a 1.00 goals-against average and a 0.968 save percentage.  Gore, a native of Kamloops, BC, led the Bruins to wins over the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Kelowna Rockets, Kamloops Blazers and Portland Winterhawks.
