Moulson\'s big heart

By Brittany Cole and Brian Croce

The 2010-11 season may be over for Islanders forward Matt Moulson, but he’s still adding to his assist total by raising awareness of heart-related risks in today’s youth.

Moulson was on hand June 11 at Youth Heart Health Awareness Day in an effort to educate people about the risks of heart conditions in young people.

“It’s important to support programs like these that educate parents about the risks associated with sports and athletics,” Moulson said.

Moulson signed autographs and took pictures with all the fans in attendance. The event, sponsored by the Nassau County Police Activity League, Winthrop-University Hospital and CardiacScan Imaging, was held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center.

Youth Heart Health Awareness Day aimed to create awareness about hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in people under 30, including athletes, according to Winthrop-University Hospital. Moulson stressed the importance of spreading information about this issue.

“This event allows parents to know the precautions and know the things they can do to save a kid in case of an emergency,” Moulson said. “It’s great to be able to come out here and support that.”

To help prevent tragedies dealing with HCM, three cardiologists spoke about the risk factors, specifically in sports. The doctors discussed these factors and explained the importance of screenings and how they help to prevent such sudden deaths. The doctors who spoke were Winthrop-University Hospital, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Treatment Center Srihari S. Naidu, M.D. and Director of Pediatric Cardiology Carlos Montoya-Iraheta, along with Pediatric Cardiologist from Hackensack University Medical Center Robert Tozzi, M.D.

CPR training kits and free instruction was also available for any interested participants.

Between signing autographs and taking pictures, the two-time 30-goal scorer also stressed having defibrillators on site at sporting events and growing the number of people who know basic CPR.
