Isles locker room shows commitment to new team

Over the summer, the New York Islanders made changes to the players’ dressing room, giving the place where the team spends so much of their time, a fresh, new look.

Newspaper print collages used to line the wall above the player’s stalls, paying homage to the dynasty teams of the 1980s. Entering the franchise’s 40th anniversary season, they swapped them out for prints of today’s squad.

“I think we tried to keep, some things that reminded us of teams in the ‘80s, their Stanley Cups and their success, but we want to create our own legacy and memories as well,” Islanders forward Matt Moulson said.

Hanging above each player’s stall are two-foot square pictures of themselves, an addition seldom seen in other NHL dressing rooms. When each player looks around the room, they see their teammate’s images hanging above their stalls, a reminder of what they all mean to each other.

Behind the pictures, piping of the teams’ colors have been painted on the wall, making the room appear both bigger and brighter than when it was bordered with black, white and grey. The piping is consistent with images the team uses for branding.

“I really like the pictures above the guys’ stalls,” Kyle Okposo said. “It’s pretty neat and I’ve never seen it done before. The guys seem pretty excited about it.”

The dressing room design is also centered on one of the most important characteristics of the Islanders organization, commitment. Above the doorway to the main room are four Stanley Cups and the team’s motto of “Commitment” in blue, block letters.

Okposo said, “We’ve really wanted to make our theme commitment this year. We have a few things that as a team, we discussed and now they’re posted around the room.”

The team also upgraded their gym. It features numerous blue, white and orange signs with motivational quotes about commitment, excellence and determination. On the way out to the ice, there is one last sign that simply reads: Pride.

“It’s nice. It’s kind of our time,” Okposo added. “We obviously know what happened in the past and we respect that. We know the tradition, but the time is now and we need to start paving the way for us.”

All of these design changes come a year after the Islanders locker room was completely rennovated, which includes a new kitchen, a larger players' lounge and training room, fresh carpet and a new coat of paint.
