Sharks 3, Islanders 2 - OT
The San Jose Sharks beat the New York Islanders 3-2 in overtime Saturday at Nassau Coliseum, extending the Islanders winless streak to five games.

Brent Burns scored a power play goal at 1:07 of overtime for the Sharks as Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic was penalized for delay of game. Islanders forwards Brian Rolston and Jay Pandolfo seemingly contested the penalty on the ice after the puck appeared to hit the glass on the way out.

“The play happened pretty quickly on the ice. I chipped the puck off the glass and obviously the call was, what the call was,” Hamonic said. “Those are the bounces you have to deal with sometimes.”

San Jose jumped out to an early lead, with Joe Pavelski scoring just 17 seconds in on the first shot of the game. A powerplay goal, it was a blow to the Islanders penalty killing, which has been stellar so far this season.

Rick DiPietro looked solid in his first start of 2011-12. DiPietro was a victim of a bad bounce on his first shot of the game, a ricochet off the post to an open Pavelski, who made no mistake in front of the open net.

“That wasn’t the way you want to start your first game after a month off,” DiPietro said. “But maybe it was good just to get the nerves out.”

The Islanders powerplay was in fine form tonight, with the team scoring both their goals with the man advantage. In the second period, John Tavares scored his seventh of the season after PA Parenteau fished out a Thomas Greiss rebound. Eight minutes later Michael Grabner would deflect a Kyle Okposo pass behind Greiss, giving the line two goals in the last two games.

Logan Couture would even it up for the Sharks on the games only even strength goal. Couture put it high glove side on DiPietro who was caught deep in his net.

There was no lack of opportunities for the Islanders, who had 20 shots at the halfway mark in the game and 37 total. The Sharks had 30 shots.

Before the game, 10 members of the Islanders 1992-93 conference finalist team were honored in a pregame ceremony. Pierre Turgeon, Benoit Houge and Darius Kasparaitis were among the players on hand to for the ceremonial faceoff and autograph session before the game.

The attendance was 11,742. The Islanders next game is Thursday night versus Winnipeg at Nassau Coliseum.
