The defending Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins defeated the Islanders 6-0 at Nassau Coliseum on Saturday night.

The Bruins remain perfect (8-0) in the month of November, as they won their eighth straight game and improved their record to 11-7-0. For the Islanders, the loss marks the fourth time this season they have been shut out as they fell to 5-9-3 overall.

Nineteen-year-old Tyler Seguin kicked off the scoring showing his speed through the Islanders defense. He backhanded pass to Patrice Bergeron, who buried at 7:08 to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

Nathan Horton extended the Bruins’ lead to 2-0 when he ripped a shot over Rick DiPietro’s glove while on the powerplay. Late in the period, a loose puck was poked Chris Kelly’s way. Kelly then blasted a slap shot to give the Bruins a commanding 3-0 lead late in the first period.

After one, the Bruins had outshot the Islanders 13-2.

“They (Bruins) threw pucks on net and played physical,” Matt Martin said. “We weren’t moving our feet and I don’t know if we’re intimidated or what but we shouldn’t be. We need to play tougher, initiate the contact on push the pace on them.”

The Isles coaching staff decided to make a lineup change during the first intermission, as Anders Nilsson made his National Hockey League debut, relieving DiPietro. The 21-year-old made 14 saves on 17 shots.

The Islanders picked up their pace in the second, but could not muster a goal. Last year’s Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas made 23 saves on the night and recorded his second shutout of the season.

Nilsson surrendered his first NHL goal in the third period just as the Bruins fifth powerplay was expired. Andrew Ference ripped a shot from the blue line that found its way through traffic and past Nilsson to give the Bruins a 4-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Kelly netted his second of the game to put the B’s up five.

“We have to take a step back and look in the mirror,” Martin said. “Everyone in the room needs to better, including myself. We have to do something, we can’t keep losing games like this, we’re better than this. This organization deserves to win and we owe it to the fans to be better.”

The Islanders will look to rebound when they travel to Pittsburgh on Monday in search of their first road in of the season in a game against the Penguins. The Islanders honored the team’s first captain Ed Westfall in a pregame ceremony by inducting him into the Islanders Hall of Fame.
