Poulin recognized for outstanding week
If Kevin Poulin’s New Year’s resolution was to not allow a goal in 2012, he made it further then most of us did with our resolutions.

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers goalie recorded three straight shutouts to start January, blanking the Worcester Sharks, the Manchester Monarchs and the Portland Pirates before topping the Providence Bruins 3-2 in a shootout. Poulin went 221:54 without surrendering a goal, setting a new Sound Tigers franchise record for the longest shutout streak, and falling 27:57 shy of the AHL record set by Johnny Bower in 1957.

“You never really think about making three straight shutouts,” Poulin said. “It just happens. The first game, you get a shutout, second game, second shutout. You go, wow that’s crazy, and before the third game, you’re just like, why not a third one.”

An eleven-period shutout streak could not escape the attention of the AHL. The league named Poulin the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending January 8. For the achievement, Poulin will receive an etched crystal award at a future Sound Tigers home game.

The hot streak also earned Poulin his third call-up of the season on Monday afternoon. Poulin is expected to start his first NHL game of the season tonight against Detroit.

Despite all the individual recognition, the Montreal native was quick to give his teammates credit for the team’s four-game winning streak.

“It’s not only me, it’s the team,” Poulin said. “My D helped me a lot and when I had to make the saves, I made them. We really stepped up for our last few of games.”

The Sound Tigers scored four goals in each of the shutout wins, with major contributions from Casey Cizikas (2g/3a), Rhett Rakhshani (3g/2a) and Kael Mouillierat (3g/2a).

Poulin said now the focus for the Sound Tigers is to build off of the undefeated start in 2012, continue to shut down teams and make the playoffs in the spring.
