Josh Bailey scored the game-deciding goal in the sixth round of the shootout as the Islanders defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 before a crowd of 21,273 at Bell Centre in Montreal. Bailey’s goal came in the sixth round of the shootout; it was the longest shootout of the season for the Isles. The win breaks a five-game (0-3-2) winless streak and snaps a club record-tying streak of four consecutive one-goal defeats.

For the fourth straight game, at least one defenseman earned a point on each goal (11 goals total). Mark Streit has a four-game assist streak (1-4-5). John Tavares saw his four-game point streak (4-3-7) ended. Frans Nielsen’s goal established a new career high with 14 goals. Aaron Palushaj’s goal was his second career tally.

The 38 shots were the most for the Isles since they had 38 against Buffalo on February 4. The Isles had recorded 31 shots or less in 16 straight games, since recording 33 shots on February 9 against Montreal. Every Islander but Travis Hamonic and Mark Eaton had at least one.

Nielsen is 22 of 37 (59.5%) in career shootout attempts. He has regained first place in NHL history ahead of Slava Kozlov (58.7%) and Trevor Linden (58.3%) on the all-time shootout list (minimum 12). Nielsen is 6 of 10 in the shootout this season.
Bailey’s goal was his first career game-deciding goal and came on his first shootout attempt this season. He is 2-6 in his career in shootout attempts.
