Every NHL player has a sweet spot; that piece of real estate on the ice from which he’s most likely to score. For Islanders winger Michael Grabner, known for his speed and breakaway opportunities, his biggest sweet spot is any open ice behind the opposing defense. A close second for Grabner comes off the ice in the form of edible sweets.

The Grabner family celebrated Aidan’s first birthday Saturday, March 31 after the Islanders game against the Boston Bruins. No birthday is complete without a special cake though, so before the celebration could start, Grabs took Aidan on a special trip.
After practice Friday afternoon, Grabner and his fiancé, Heather, headed to the Garden State to pick up the most unique first birthday cake they could find. They traveled to Jersey City, NJ, where they met television’s “Cake Boss,” Buddy Valastro, who was waiting with Aidan’s special cake.
Grabner and family toured the premises and met Valastro’s team of bakers, who created an Islanders-inspired hockey rink cake. The cake featured two star players facing off atop the icing – Daddy and Aidan – one in Isles blue and one in Isles white. There was also a separate puck-cake, aside the rink, adorned with the Islanders traditional seal.
“This is so cool, to have Buddy and these guys make Aidan’s first birthday cake,” Grabner said. “When he was born, it was the greatest day of my life. A year later, it’s really special to be able to do something like this for him and we’ll have great photos and video for his memories later on. We’re lucky to be where we are and I’m very excited about this.”
After the tour and cake-viewing, Grabner chatted with the Cake Boss in a surreal moment – a hockey star almost star-crossed himself, but not quite.
“Meeting Buddy and his team was great and something I’ll definitely remember for a long time,” Grabner said. “We’re big fans of his show, so to see him in person, see where the cameras are, how all that works, is interesting and added to our fun today. We just talked and heard about how they make the show. He’s a good guy.”
A year after having his first child, this was clearly icing on the cake for Grabner.
