Moulson honored with Islanders Community Service Award
The Islanders organization prides itself in the value placed not only on its players’ skills, but also on their character. Even on a roster packed with hard-working, team-first individuals, there are players who stand out.

In addition to the Community Service Award, Matt Moulson received the Islanders “Good Guy” Award, presented annually to the player who best displays professionalism, courtesy and cooperation with the media. The recipient is selected by the Long Island Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

“Matt is a very accessible, very easygoing guy on a team with lots of good quotes,” Newsday beat writer Arthur Staple said. “He’s a real professional.”
On Thursday, April 5, during the Islanders home season finale, forward Matt Moulson was honored with the Islanders Community Service Award.

“Matt has taken it upon himself to become more and more involved in the Islanders community and charitable efforts every year that he’s been here,” Islanders Community Relations Manager Ann Rina said. “At the start of each season he’s come to me with new ideas of how he wants to give back.”

The Islanders Community Service Award is presented annually to the player who makes the strongest impact on the Long Island community throughout the year. The recipient is selected by the Islanders organization and serves as the team’s nomination for the NHL Foundation Player Award.

In his third season with the Islanders, Moulson’s efforts off the ice have paralleled his elite production on the ice. His career highs in goals (35), assists (33) and points (68) were matched by his growing passion for volunteering and community support.

With the help of his wife, Alicia, and his brother-in-law, Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick, Moulson created the 326 Foundation before the season began. Built upon Matt’s Charity Goal Program from last season, which saw the Isles top-scorer donate $500 for each of his goals, the 326 Foundation combines the efforts of both Moulson and Quick. Quick donates $500 for each of his wins.

The creation of the foundation also enables fans of each player and their teams to donate to the same causes. To date, the foundation has donated $17,000 to the Islanders Children’s Foundation.

“Teaming up with Jonathan, it’s good because we help kids here on Long Island with the ICF and out in LA with Kings Care,” Moulson said. “I’m just lucky to play with talented guys like Johnny, PA and Kyle to get all those goals.”

After creating the 326 Foundation, Matt attended a Wounded Warrior Project event in New York. Meeting those veterans led him to create the Matt Moulson Wounded Warrior Program, in which he hosts military personnel at every Islanders home game. Moulson and his wife take the time to meet their guests and give them personal tours of the Islanders locker room after each game.

“The whole experience, from the VIP parking and entrance, to the gift bag and 8th row seats, to the recognition on the megatron, and the meet and greet and tour of the Islanders locker room post game, made a truly memorable experience,” Wounded Warrior Bradley Noone said. “He truly seemed to care. Not only did he do the whole minor meet and greet, signature, photo session, he also went above and beyond to give me a truly unique experience by bringing me on an in depth tour of the Islanders locker room and holding meaningful conversation all the while.”

Matt also took a stance on health-related issues this season. Last summer the Islanders star took time to attend a youth healthy heart program and expanded his efforts during the season as he became a team spokesperson for the Islanders Fight Cancer campaign and Movember – the fight against prostate cancer campaign. Throughout the month of November, Matt led his teammates as they grew mustaches to raise awareness and funding for the battle against prostate cancer. Not a day went by that Matt wasn’t on his Twitter account reaching out to his fans to help the cause. He went as far as creating a “Moulstache” t-shirt with proceeds benefiting Movember. More than $1,000 went to the cause.

If previous years are any indication, Moulson will be hard at work this offseason finding new ways to top his goal totals and his community efforts for his fourth season on Long Island.
