Strome gets hot for Niagara
Niagara IceDogs (Ontario Hockey League) center Ryan Strome lit the lamp four times in two games over the weekend. Down 2-0 against the Ottawa 67’s on Sept. 28, the Mississauga, ON native scored his first goal of the season, following that up later with the game-clinching empty-netter to give the IceDogs a 4-2 victory. On Sept. 30, Strome scored twice in three minutes at Kingston to lead a comeback effort. Ultimately the effort fell short as Niagara lost 5-4, but Strome enters this week’s action tied for fifth in the OHL with four goals.

Pelech dishes out the assists
Erie Otters (OHL) defenseman Adam Pelech also posted four points last week (all assists) to match Strome’s effort. On Sept. 27, the Islanders third round (65th overall) pick in 2012 assisted on a power-play goal in a 5-1 win at Peterborough, then tallied three helpers the next night in a 6-5 overtime loss at Kingston. The big back-to-back games placed Pelech in a tie for the team lead with five assists in five games.

College seasons start this week
Scott Mayfield’s Denver Pioneers (WCHA) host the University of British Columbia this Saturday, Oct. 6 to begin the season, while Anders Lee and Robbie Russo, both with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (CCHA), will take on the US Under-18 squad at home in an exhibition contest Sunday, Oct. 7.
