LAST WEEK
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers finished the first weekend of play with a 2-0-0-0 record, and are in a four-way tie with the Manchester Monarchs, Springfield Falcons and Norfolk Admirals for first place in the Eastern Conference. The Sound Tigers’ 10 goals in two games are tied for first in the American Hockey League with Abbotsford. Below are the results from last week’s games:

10/12 at Connecticut Whale: W 6-4
10/13 vs. Providence Bruins: W 4-2

UP NEXT
The Sound Tigers only game this weekend is Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. It marks the first of four consecutive road tilts for the Islanders affiliate, who play their next home game Nov. 3. Saturday’s matchup is the first of four meetings with the Penguins. Below are the results from their 2011-12 season series, as well as a look at the 2012-13 series:

2011-12 2012-13
12/31 at WBS: L2-4 10/20 at WBS
3/10 at BRI: SOL 4-5 11/4 at BRI
4/14 at WBS: L 2-3 11/16 at WBS
4/15 at BRI: W 3-2 2/24 at BRI

Only 15 players on the Penguins current roster are returning from last season’s squad, while 10 are in their first season with the team. Among the newcomers are defenseman Dylan Reese and forward Trevor Smith, who both spent time with the Islanders and the Sound Tigers. Bridgeport forwards Colin McDonald and Brandon DeFazio both played for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last season.

NEWS & NOTES

Nino Niederreiter
scored a goal and two assists on Oct. 12 at Connecticut, and followed that up with a power play tally Oct. 13 vs. Providence. His four points trail only Syracuse’s Cory Conacher for the AHL lead. Dating back to last season, Niederreiter has goals in his last five games with the Sound Tigers.

Brandon DeFazio
is tied for first in the AHL with a plus-4 rating through two games. Travis Hamonic, Jon Landry, Colin McDonald and Aaron Ness are all tied for fifth with a plus-3 rating.

Kevin Poulin
was one of five AHL goaltenders to win two games over the weekend. His 56 saves are tops among that group, and good for first in the Eastern Conference.

Forward Brock Nelson is tied for second among AHL rookies with three points. The Warroad, MN native scored a goal and an assist on Oct. 12 at Connecticut, and earned an assist on Oct. 13 vs. Providence.
