Hurricane Sandy Recovery

Hurricane Sandy has affected residents and businesses throughout Long Island and the tri-state area. The New York Islanders are encouraging individuals who are interested in aiding the recovery effort to make a donation to the American Red Cross.

Text to Donate: Text REDCROSS to 90999 and a $10 donation will be made.

Call in a Donation: 1-800-RED-CROSS

Donate Online: http://www.redcross.org/charitable-donations

Unfortunately, the American Red Cross is not able to accept individual donations or collections of items such as clothing, food or cleaning supplies. The cost to sort, package and distribute these types of donations to disaster victims is usually greater than the cost of purchasing the items locally, and it is logistically impossible to distribute a wide variety of individual items in a meaningful and equitable way.

The best way to donate is to make a financial gift. Your gift enables the Red Cross to get prepared and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to those affected.

One of the Major Issues Red Cross is facing:

Sandy Forced the Cancellation of about 300 Blood Drives. Those who are eligible in areas unaffected by the storm are asked to schedule a blood donation now. Hurricane Sandy has already caused the cancellation of about 300 American Red Cross blood drives and more cancellations are expected as the storm continues to move to the west.

"Patients will still need blood despite the weather,” said Dr. Richard Benjamin, chief medical officer of the Red Cross. “To ensure a sufficient national blood supply is available for those in need, both during and after the storm passes, it is critical that those in unaffected areas make an appointment to donate blood as soon as possible.”

So far, the cancellations have resulted in a shortfall of more than 10,700 blood and platelet donations across 14 states that would otherwise be available for those needing transfusions.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. An average of 44,000 blood donations are needed each and every day across the country to help treat accident victims, cancer patients, and children with blood disorders. These patients and others rely on blood products during their treatment. This need does not diminish when disaster strikes.

WHO CAN GIVE? All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are generally in good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements

About the American Red Cross:

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission
