Islanders AHL affiliate looks to extend three-game winning streak when they play three games in three days this weekend

LAST WEEK

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers won all three of their games last week, scoring at least four goals in each contest. At 8-3-0-0 (16 points), the Sound Tigers are tied with the Syracuse Crunch for the second-most points in the Eastern Conference, and trail the Springfield Falcons by two points in the Northeast Division standings.

The Sound Tigers have a “three-in-three” this weekend, beginning with a road tilt against the Penguins on Nov. 16 at 7:05 p.m. Friday marks the third time the Sound Tigers will face off with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, with the teams splitting the two previous games.

The team returns home for the second matchup in nine days with the Monarchs on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. In their previous meeting on Nov. 9, The Sound Tigers won 5-2 in Head Coach Scott Pellerin’s return to Manchester, where he served as an assistant coach for six seasons.

The Sound Tigers wrap up the weekend on the road with a 3:05 p.m. start at the division-rival Providence Bruins on Nov. 18. Bridgeport went 6-2-0-0 against the Bruins last season and won 4-2 in the lone matchup this season on Oct. 13. The Sound Tigers are 3-0-0-0 against Northeast Division teams this season.

NEWS & NOTES

Center Brock Nelson scored a goal and an assist in all three games last week, and is riding a five-game goal streak (with four assists), dating back to Nov. 3. The Warroad, MN native scored the game-winning goal on Nov. 7 vs. Norfolk, and is tied with fellow Sound Tiger John Persson and Oklahoma City’s Justin Schultz for the rookie lead with two game-winners. Nelson is also tied for the AHL rookie lead and tied for sixth overall with seven goals this season.

Left wing Nino Niederreiter found the score sheet in all three games last week, extending his point streak to five games (three goals, four assists). Niederreiter co-leads the team in goals (seven), assists (six), points (13) and power play goals (two).

The Sound Tigers are 2-1-0-0 at Webster Bank Arena and 3-2-0-0 away from home this season. Bridgeport is one of six teams (Manchester Monarchs, Springfield Falcons, Rochester Americans, Toronto Marlies, Charlotte Checkers) with a winning record both at home and away.

Goaltender Anders Nilsson started and won his first two games of the 2012-13 season last weekend, turning aside 32-of-34 shots at Manchester on Nov. 9 and making 16 saves on Nov. 11 vs. Connecticut. The second-year pro owns a 17-8-2 career record in the AHL. Meanwhile, Kevin Poulin is tied for third in the AHL with six wins this season, despite having played fewer games than everyone else in the top-six.

Bridgeport went 4-for-13 on the power play in three games last week, scoring at least once in each contest. The Sound Tigers rank ninth in the league on the man advantage at 21.1% (12-for-57), and fifth at home at 25.0% (7-for-28).

The Sound Tigers rank second in the Eastern Conference and fifth in the AHL in home penalty kill percentage (90.0%). The team has allowed just two goals in 20 shorthanded situations at Webster Bank Arena, while posting one shorthanded goal.

The Sound Tigers have six defensemen averaging at least half a point per game. Matt Donovan and Aaron Ness (seven points each) lead the way, while Travis Hamonic has six points in 10 games, including the game-winning goal on Nov. 9 at Manchester and the game-tying marker on Nov. 11 vs. Connecticut. Jon Landry (11 games, six points), Jordan Hill (five games, three points) and Calvin de Haan (three games, two points) have also averaged more than half a point per game.
