BOX SCORE

David Ullstrom scored two goals and an assist to lead the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to a 6-2 rout of the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Sunday. With the win, the Sound Tigers improve to 10-4-0-0. Providence falls to 6-7-0-1.

Ullstrom led the Sound Tigers with 24 goals last season, and finally found the back of the net for the first time in the 2012-13 campaign 5:11 into the opening period. The Sound Tigers picked off a pass in the neutral zone, and Ullstrom fired a slap shot from the left faceoff circle over Bruins goaltender Niklas Svedberg to give the Sound Tigers an early 1-0 lead. Ullstrom was instrumental in the Sound Tigers second goal, as the visitors doubled their lead midway through the first period. Ullstrom skated the puck into the Providence zone, made a move around a Bruins defenseman and found Matt Watkins, who fired into an open net to put the Sound Tigers up 2-0.

Providence responded with a pair of goals in the second half of the period to even the score. The Bruins held the puck in the Sound Tigers zone, and Anders Nilsson had his goalie stick knocked out of his hand. Providence took advantage, as Christian Hanson deflected the puck through Nilsson to cut the Bruins deficit to one at 12:06 of the first. David Warsofsky beat the buzzer to even the score, sending a blast past Nilsson with 0.5 seconds left in the opening frame to tie the score at two.

The Sound Tigers took control of the game in the second period, scoring three times in the middle frame. Moments after a pair of fights between Nathan McIver and Bobby Robins, as well as Ty Wishart and Kevan Miller, Travis Hamonic sent a wrist shot through traffic past Svedberg to put Bridgeport ahead 3-2 early in the second period. Nino Niederreiter increase the lead to two goals with a power-play tally after he took a cross-ice feed from Matt Donovan and snapped it into the open net at 13:27 of the period.

Ullstrom’s second goal of the game put the Sound Tigers ahead by three, as the third-year Sound Tiger made an impressive move around a defenseman and flipped the puck off of a Bruins defenseman and in. Ullstrom’s goal came on the power play as well, and the Sound Tigers held a commanding 5-2 lead after two periods.

John Persson closed out the scoring early in the third period. After Michael Hutchinson had replaced Niklas Svedberg in net for Providence, Persson deflected Ty Wishart’s point shot through Hutchinson for his fourth goal of the season.

The Sound Tigers return to action on Wednesday night when they make their first trip of the season to the Glens Falls Civic Center to face the Adirondack Phantoms at 7:00 p.m.

NOTES: Niederreiter’s two points extended his point-scoring streak to eight consecutive games. Nilsson made 29 saves to earn the victory and improved to 4-0-0 this season. The Sound Tigers have scored a power play goal in six straight games, and have scored on 13 of their last 41 power play opportunities. The teams combined for five fights; Brett Gallant recorded 12 penalty minutes and upped his PIM total to 71, which currently leads the AHL.
