Sound Tigers head to Portland and Norfolk for three-game, five-day road trip

Bridgeport Sound Tigers Notes

LAST WEEK
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers went 1-2-0-0 last week, earning a 7-2 win on Sunday, Dec. 9 against the Syracuse Crunch, but losing 4-2 at the Connecticut Whale on Wednesday, Dec. 5, and 3-1 at the Albany Devils on Saturday, Dec. 8. At 11-11-0-1 (23 points), the Sound Tigers trail the Springfield Falcons by nine points in the Northeast Division.

UP NEXT
The Sound Tigers have a three-game, five-day road trip this week beginning with their first matchup of the season against the Portland Pirates on Dec. 11 at 7:00 p.m. Bridgeport and Portland split the teams’ six contests last season, with the Sound Tigers scoring 21 goals and allowing 18.

The club will then travel south to Virginia to take on the Norfolk Admirals for games on Friday, Dec. 14 and Saturday, Dec. 15. The Sound Tigers and Admirals have split two decisions so far this season, and will play eight times total in 2012-13.

NEWS & NOTES
Left wing Nino Niederreiter leads the team in goals (11), assists (13) and points (24). The 20-year-old registered points in all three games last week, including two assists in the Sound Tigers 7-2 win vs. Syracuse on Dec. 9.

Forward Brock Nelson is tied for third among AHL rookies with 10 goals, and tied for fourth with 19 points this season. The Warroad, MN native posted a career-high three points (one goal, two assists) on Dec. 9 vs. Syracuse. Through 23 games, the Sound Tigers have received 25 goals from rookies, including seven each from Johan Sundstrom and John Persson, and one from Mike Halmo.

Forward Colin McDonald registered a season-high four points (two goals, two assists) on Dec. 9 vs. Syracuse and has nine points (two goals, seven assists) in his last six games. The newly-minted Sound Tigers captain ranks second on the squad with 12 assists and third with 16 points.

After going 3-for-5 on the man advantage Dec. 9 vs. Syracuse, the Sound Tigers have the top-ranked power play in the AHL at 23.4% (25-for-107). The Sound Tigers power play has been especially effective at Webster Bank Arena, succeeding on 28.3% of its opportunities (15-for-53).

The Sound Tigers penalty kill has also been successful at Webster Bank Arena, holding its opponents off the board in 42-of-46 shorthanded opportunities (91.3%, 3rd AHL). Forwards Brandon DeFazio and Casey Cizikas have netted shorthanded markers at home.

Defenseman Jon Landry scored power play markers on Dec. 5 at Connecticut and Dec. 9 vs. Syracuse, and is tied for sixth in the league with five power play goals. The Montreal, QC native leads Sound Tigers blueliners with six goals and 13 points on the season.

The Sound Tigers rank first in the Eastern Conference and second in the AHL with 599 penalty minutes. Brett Gallant (121 PIMs, 1st in AHL) and Nathan McIver (92 PIMs, 6th in AHL) lead the team.
