Team returns from three-game road trip to play twice at home this week

Bridgeport Sound Tigers Notes

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers played three games on the road last week, going 1-0-1-1, as each game went past 60 minutes. On Tuesday, Dec. 11, Bridgeport lost 2-1 in overtime against the Portland Pirates. The Sound Tigers beat the Norfolk Admirals 4-3 in overtime Friday, Dec. 15, but lost the rematch the next night in the shootout, 3-2. At 12-11-1-2 (27 points), the Sound Tigers are in second place in the Northeast Division, eight points back of the Springfield Falcons.

The Sound Tigers return home for two games this week at Webster Bank Arena, beginning with a matchup on Wednesday, Dec. 19 against the Albany Devils. The Sound Tigers lost the only meeting this season between the two teams on Dec. 8 by a score of 3-1.

On Saturday, Dec. 22, the Sound Tigers host the Adirondack Phantoms in the second contest between the two teams this season. The Phantoms won the previous matchup 5-1 on Nov. 21 in Glens Falls.

Left wing Nino Niederreiter is riding a six-game point streak (three goals, four assists) and is tied for fourth in the league with 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists). The 20-year-old posted a nine-game point streak from Nov. 3-21 and leads the team in goals and points.

Center Brock Nelson ranks third among AHL rookies with 11 goals, and is tied for third among first-year players with 22 points. The Warroad, MN native has six points (two goals, four assists) in his last three games. Through 26 games, the Sound Tigers have received 28 goals from rookies, including nine from John Persson, seven from Johan Sundstrom and one from Mike Halmo.

Forward Colin McDonald posted two assists on Dec. 14 at Norfolk for his third multi-assist game of December. The Sound Tigers captain has 10 helpers (along with two goals) in his last nine games, and leads the team with 15 this season.

Goaltender Kevin Poulin made 50 saves in regulation and overtime in a 3-2 shootout loss on Dec. 15 at Norfolk. The save total was one shy of his career-high of 51, a mark set on Jan. 27, 2012 at Adirondack, and two shy of Wade Dubielewicz’s team record of 52.

The Sound Tigers have power play goals in four straight games and have the top-ranked power play in the Eastern Conference at 23.0% (28-for-122). The Sound Tigers have been especially effective on the man advantage at Webster Bank Arena, succeeding on 28.3% of its opportunities (15-for-53). Bridgeport is tied for second in the AHL with one short-handed goal against.

The Sound Tigers penalty kill has also been successful at Webster Bank Arena, holding its opponents off the board in 42-of-46 shorthanded opportunities (91.3%, 3rd AHL). Forwards Brandon DeFazio and Casey Cizikas have netted shorthanded markers at home.

The Sound Tigers rank second in the league in penalty minutes with 674 (Syracuse Crunch – 676). Brett Gallant (128 PIMs, 1st in AHL) and Nathan McIver (121 PIMs, 3rd in AHL) lead the team.

The Sound Tigers will honor the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims with commemorative patches and stickers on their uniforms for the remainder of the 2012-13 season. In addition, a graphic with the initials “S.H.E.S.” and the date “12.14.12” will be painted into the ice behind each net for the remainder of the season. FULL STORY
