Sound Tigers play back-to-back contests against Whale beginning Wednesday
LAST WEEK
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers won one of two games at home last week to remain in second place in the Northeast Division. On Wednesday, Dec. 19, the Sound Tigers beat the Albany Devils 4-3 on a third period goal by Matt Donovan. On Saturday, Dec. 22, the Sound Tigers third period comeback fell short, as they lost to the Adirondack Phantoms 3-2.

UP NEXT
The Sound Tigers play three games this week, starting with back-to-back contests against the in-state rival Connecticut Whale. The teams will meet in Bridgeport on Wednesday, Dec. 26 and in Hartford on Thursday, Dec. 27. Both games will start at 7 p.m. The two teams have split the four previous matchups, with Bridgeport winning the first two and Connecticut taking the last two decisions.

The Sound Tigers return home for a 7 p.m. contest against the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday, Dec. 29. Bridgeport is 2-0 against Manchester this season, outscoring them 9-2.

NEWS & NOTES
Center Johan Sundstrom scored a goal on Dec. 22 vs. Adirondack and has points in three consecutive games (one goal, three assists). The Gothenburg, SWE native is tied for 13th among AHL rookies with 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) this season.

Defenseman Matt Donovan posted the first multi-goal game of his professional career on Dec. 19 vs. Albany. Donovan’s goal at 12:44 of the third period held up as the game-winner. The Edmond, OK native leads the team with a plus-7 rating and ranks second among defensemen with 13 points (three goals, 10 assists).

With assists on Dec. 19 vs. Albany and Dec. 22 vs. Adirondack, left wing John Persson is riding a four-game point streak (two goals, two assists), and has six points (three goals, three assists) in his last six games. Persson ranks third on the team with nine goals, and tied for fifth with 15 points this season.

Left wing Nino Niederreiter is tied for 11th in the league with 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists). The 20-year-old posted a nine-game point streak from Nov. 3-21 and leads the team in goals and points.

Right wing Colin McDonald earned an assist on Dec. 19 vs. Albany, and leads the team with 16 assists. The Sound Tigers captain has points in nine of his last 11 games (two goals, 11 assists).

Center Brock Nelson is tied for fifth among AHL rookies with 11 goals, and tied for fourth among first-year players with 22 points, despite missing the last three games due to injury. Through 28 games, the Sound Tigers have received 29 goals from rookies, including nine from John Persson, eight from Johan Sundstrom and one from Mike Halmo.

Bridgeport has the top-ranked power play in the Eastern Conference at 21.2% (28-for-132). The Sound Tigers have been especially effective on the man advantage at Webster Bank Arena, succeeding on 23.8% of their opportunities (15-for-63). Bridgeport is tied for second in the AHL with one short-handed goal against.

The Sound Tigers penalty kill has also been successful at Webster Bank Arena, holding its opponents off the board in 51-of-56 shorthanded opportunities (91.1%, T-2nd AHL). Forwards Brandon DeFazio and Casey Cizikas have netted shorthanded markers at home.

The Sound Tigers lead the AHL in penalty minutes with 716. Brett Gallant (138 PIMs, 2nd in AHL) and Nathan McIver (126 PIMs, 3rd in AHL) lead the team.
