Jets 5, Islanders 4

Evander Kane scored 1:59 into overtime for the deciding goal, as the Winnipeg Jets rallied from a 4-2 deficit midway through the third period and defeated the Islanders 5-4 before a sellout crowd of 15,004 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. The Islanders do earn a point, and are now 1-1-1 on this five-game road trip, while Winnipeg wins their third straight game, and extends their points streak to four games (3-0-1).

Evgeni Nabokov made 30 saves; he is 2-1-1 on the season. Nabokov was terrific in the first period especially, when the Jets outshot the Isles 12-6.

Former Islander Al Montoya made his Jets debut, stopping 21 shots for the OT win. Montoya, whose last win was against the Jets on April 5, 2012, improves to 22-17-10 on his career.

Power Plays

The Isles went 1-for-2 on the power play while Winnipeg was 1-for-4.

Streit’s power play goal was the third by an Islander defenseman this season. They had only seven all last season.

The Jets’ power play goal was the first allowed by the Islanders in 17 times shorthanded this season. All three of Dustin Byfuglien’s goals this season have been scored on the power play.

This was the third game of a five-game road trip. The Islanders are 1-1-1 on the trip, and will make stops in Pittsburgh and New Jersey before returning to the Coliseum on Super Bowl Sunday. The Islanders will also play five consecutive road games to end the regular season.

John Tavares has 209 career points; he is 55 points ahead of Matt Duchene for most among 2009 draft picks. No other player in that draft is anywhere close. Tavares also has more goals and more assists than any other player in that draft.

Matt Moulson has three goals this season; John Tavares has earned an assist on two of them. Tavares has now been on ice for 63 consecutive Moulson goals, earning assists on 42 of them, dating back to a Moulson goal on Nov. 17, 2010 against Tampa Bay.

Ironmen

Matt Moulson, the Isles’ reigning ironman, has played in all 251 games since joining the team. Moulson’s streak is the longest for an Islander in the Post-Cup era and the fourth-longest in club history. Billy Harris played in the first 576 games in Islander history; that figure still stands as the club record.

Three other Islanders, Frans Nielsen, John Tavares and Mark Streit, also played in every game last season. Tavares extended his streak to 164 consecutive games, while Nielsen and Streit have each played in 87.

NHL Debut

With his brother and mother in attendance, defenseman Thomas Hickey made his NHL debut. Hickey had three shots on goal and an even rating. Hickey saw important minutes, playing both late in the third period and in overtime. Hickey is the eighth player to make his Islander debut this season.

Hamonic Goes Home

Travis Hamonic recorded an assist in a game in his hometown, and has points in each of his last three games against Winnipeg. Hamonic did not play late in the third period or in overtime, as he appeared to be shaken up after a collision with Evander Kane.

Missing Men

Eric Boulton and Thomas Hickey replaced Casey Cizikas and Joe Finley. Radek Martinek was also scratched. Josh Bailey and Jesse Joensuu remain suspended after suffering injuries in Europe. Lubomir Visnovsky has not yet reported.

Season Series Stats

The Jets lead the season series 1-0-0 and two points to one (Isles are 0-0-1). It’s this generation’s Jets first home-ice win over the Isles in three tries, and ends an Islander five-game unbeaten streak in Manitoba, dating back to 1991. The teams will next meet on April 2 at the Coliseum, before completing the season series on April 20 in Winnipeg.

Happy Anniversary

23 years ago today (1-27-90): Patrick Flatley matched a career-high with five points as the Islanders pounded Pittsburgh 9-3 at the Coliseum. Pat Lafontaine had two goals for the Islanders, giving him 42 goals on the season.

All-time, the Isles are 6-9-3 on this date, although they have earned points in each of their last three games (1-0-2).

On The Farm

Nino Niederreiter and Matt Donovan are representing the Sound Tigers at this weekend’s AHL All-Star Break. Niederreiter helped earn his team points in Sunday’s skill competition in the speed relay while Donovan blistered a shot at over 98 mph to help his team win the team competition in that category. Niederreiter also hit 4-of-7 in the target shooting competition. The AHL All-Star Game is on Monday. Bridgeport, who is 19-19-2-2, resumes play on Thursday against Providence.

The road trip continues on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. There is no MSG+ telecast; Dave Strader and Brian Engblom will have the call on NBCSN.

This is the first of three trips to Pittsburgh for the Islanders this season (the only city that they will visit three times). After some frustrating times early last season, the Islanders swept the Penguins in a home-and-home last March, raising their season mark vs. Pittsburgh to 2-3-1.

The Islanders will be looking for their third straight win over Pittsburgh; they haven’t managed to do that since 2007.
