Season series (2011-12)
The Islanders went 2-1-1 against the Sabres last season, taking five of a possible eight points. The Sabres won the last meeting between the two teams on Feb. 21 by a 2-1 margin behind goals by Tyler Myers and Thomas Vanek. Frans Nielsen scored the lone Islanders goal, and Matt Martin dropped the gloves with Buffalo's Mike Weber. The Islanders and Sabres will meet twice more this season, with both contests coming on the road.

Sabres player to watch
Thomas Vanek - Left Wing
The Sabres left wing has posted 25 goals or more in each of his seven seasons in the league, and despite the shortened season, is on track to do it again. He leads the league in goals (10) and points (21), and is tied for fourth in assists (11). Vanek has found the score sheet in 9-of-10 games this season, including five-point efforts on Jan. 20 vs. Philadelphia and Jan. 31 at Boston.

•John Tavares has been on ice for 64 consecutive Matt Moulson goals, earning assists on 42 of them, dating back to November 17, 2010 against Tampa Bay.
