The National Hockey League announced today that New York Islanders center John Tavares was named the First Star of the Week for the period ending February 17, 2013.
Tavares, 22, scored five goals and two assists in three games last week, leading the Islanders to a 2-1-0 record. With a tally in each game, the Mississauga, ON, native extended his goal-scoring streak to a career-high five games. Tavares capped the week with his fourth career hat trick Saturday, Feb. 16 against the New Jersey Devils.
The Islanders first overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft is tied for sixth in the league in scoring with 20 points (11 goals, nine assists). Tavares currently leads the Islanders in scoring, as he did in each of his first three NHL seasons.
